swap Garmin during IM?
Can't Post
I like to use the Garmin 305 for my run in IMAZ. However, the battery wont last the full race, so cant use it from start.
so what do you do?
I can use another Garmin during bike and then swap out during T2, that way i dont have to swap heart strap as well.
but by doing this, i have no direct time for overall race.
opinions?
thanks
Kerry

Use search here.
My FR305 lasted over 15 hours elapsed (i.e. from when I turned it on before the
swim until my finish at just under 13:30).

sorry, i have the 405. and it doesnt last longer than 6-7 hours.
so i was planning on putting it on after the swim and then change to another after the bike.
so real question is, how important for psyche to know the overall time in IM or is it just better to focus on individual legs?

If you're really worried about your overall time just buy a cheap digital watch and wear it throughout the race.

I have no need to know the overall time because you always start at 0700. Even during
exercise I can do that math. :)
I use mine for HR.

I am planning on doing the same thing. Using my 405 for the bike and my GF's for the run. It tells time, so if you need to know your overall times just subtract the current time from 7AM.
My other option is to wear my polar RS400 to monitor my HR the entire race, and just use the garmin to watch my cadence on the bike. Not sure which route I will go yet...

i have trouble adding up during regular workouts. cant imagine i will be able to do even basic math near end of run.......
are there time clocks at end of swim and bike?
i will use my Garmin and just ask people around me how long the race has been going.......

Of course the standard ST reply would be that you just need to go faster so you can finish before the battery dies, but I swapped out my 305 at T2. Good luck!

the real question is, why do you need it for the bike?
a GPS can be a great pacing tool for the run, as long as you are using it to control yourself early in the run. A GPS will tell you nothing useful on the bike.
If you plan on pacing by MPH you've already lost, and the Garmin will not help you.

The Garmin 310XT lasts about 20 hours on a full charge.
Not saying you want to go spend another $350 but it will more than fix your problem.

i am all dialed in with power for my bike. but i use bpm as another item to be aware of while pacing.
i just like the position of watch on wrist while in aero. and its easy to keep that as reference.
if i was using mph, you are right, i am already lost.........

ok, my bad. you know we here on ST like to tell people what their questions should have been.
since we're power brothers, I'll tell you what I do. I like the HR backup as well, it tells me a little bit because I know from experience that even though my power is in line if I have a HR over a certain number, it has an effect on the run, especially in hot races. I like to give myself a task at the beginning of the bike to get my HR down below a certain number before starting to push. You probably already know this.
where is your power reading out? if it's not on the Garmin my recommendation to only use it on the run sticks.

A couple of points:
- Don't leave it on while out on the swim. I came into T1 to find the battery died/unit switched off. It needed to be system reset.
- be sure to be able to bike or run while you are rescaning for the new heart rate monitor. They don't always match if using two straps.
- use the velcro wrist band for easier swap between bike and run.
- set it on Smart Recording.
- go fast

Here is what worked well for me. on one wrist I wore a watch which I started at the 7:00 start...this watch also had a timer that went off every 10 minutes. I used this as a reminder to eat and drink on the bike. On my other wrist, I wore a HR monitor for the bike....not my garmin. When I got into T2 I changed HR monitors, the first thing I took out of my bag was my 305, I turned it on then changed into my run get up and took off my other HR monitor. In the 2 minutes I was in the tent, the watch sync'd up and I was on my way. It worked well for me. Having the miles splits was very helpful to keep me on pace.
That said, I wasn't all that worried about the 15 seconds that the watch swap cost me. My guess is that if you are woried about the length of the battery life...kona is not in the cards anyway.
I have heard that the garmin 305 will last much longer if you use it in 'indoor' mode so the GPS is not active...but I never did a test of how long the battery would last. Could be something to try.

Come on...search really isn't that hard to use.

I was able to use my 305 the whole time, including being on before the swim start and I went a little
less than 13:30.

I have the 405, which runs out a lot quicker.
i am borrowing another 405 and will put one in my T1 and other in T2. will make sure the heart monitor sync with both watches.
Use the powertap on bike, which is the only way to fly.....
thanks for all the tips.

I vote for just using it on the run. As you have a pt computer you can see all you need on that while riding. Knowing pace for the run is the key. Overall time will not help you very much out there. When you get close to the finish the clock will read whatever it reads.

What would be the purpose of wearing the 305 if your not going to activate GPS, because that's how it calculates pace and mph, right? So if thats the advice, it's better to just wear a watch wtih a timer.

Most reviews only give it a 10 hour battery life. Not saying he didn't get 13:30 out of his but that goes against the reviews I have read.

I remember reading that if you change the type of GPS readings it takes, you can make teh GPS last longer. I think if you change the amount of readings it takes, from like a few seconds to 5-10 sec intervals, it would probaly cause the battery to last longer.
Not sure if this is what this guy did to make it last that long, but I've heard that changing the intervals on the GPS may be able to help (if I remember correctly).

If you use the cadence sensor and turn the GPS off, the 305 will calculate speed/distance using that, just like a regular cyclocomputer. I use this trick too. (Just remember to make sure that your tire circumf. is accurate, or close-to-accurate.)

i used my 305 three for full ims. all times i turned it on (with the gps functioning) 30 minutes before swim start and left it on my bike. i then started it when I got on my bike. then put it on my wrist for the run. when it was brand new it beeped at me once on the run saying battery was low. i crossed the line at 12:19 and it stayed on until after 13:30 (so over 14 hours on, with the GPS functioning). the next two times i finished faster and it never beeped at me. Now the thing is over 3 years old and the battery life is significantly shorter, it can last through a HIM, but that is it.
