running faster by lightening your wallet? Can't Post

For almost as long as I can remember, I've had pronation issues with my right foot that caused lots of blisters and calluses on the inside ball of my foot. I'd come to accept it. I'd also had a somewhat chronic soreness in my right glute after long or hard runs, which I just attributed to normal soreness.

About a month ago, for no particular reason, I just started carrying my wallet in my front pocket instead of my rear. I was doing more swimming at the time, but since then have started ramping up my run mileage again and guess what... Not only is that soreness in my right glute completely nonexistant, but the pronation issue on my right foot seems to have nearly vanished. In fact, now I'm having issues with blisters along the forward part of my left arch. I can't really say that I'm suddenly faster, but my running economy does seem to somewhat improved, especially at longer distance.

So can carrying your wallet (it's not even a fat one) in your rear pocket really screw you up that bad?

Yes. I was having serious right hip issues when I was running lots of distance (30-50mi/wk plus cycling) and the issue was sitting on a thick wallet in my right back pocket all day. I took all the crap out of the wallet, put it in my left front pocket and the problems went away nearly immediately. Basically it was throwing off my spinal alignment on a regular daily basis and this contributed to tightness in all those muscles on the right side. My brother has a 2 inch thick wallet in his back right pocket and it doesn't seem to bother him though...

Seems to be a generally accepted theory on biking faster, anyway - empty wallet on a regular basis.

Yes? Though i have no proof.

I sometimes run holding my iphone, mainly if I forget my watch to time my run and for music (if I don't bring my shuffle, or don't go sans music) and I only hold it in my left hand. Just can't seem to hold it in my right... doesn't feel right. Anyway. Whenever I do, I definitely notice added strain to my left hip, left quad. I attribute it to this, so I try not to do it.

as for the bike... never carry anything on me, always put it in a bag/bento.

Then, you can just stuff a bunch of napkins in the other pocket to balance out. :-)

Not to dig up an old thread- but I just randomly remembered...
I used to have a regular wallet, not huge, 1/2-3/4" thick. I never had any serious problems, but on long car rides, and sitting in class, it would piss me off to no extent. I switched to a smaller moneyclip type wallet, and consolodated what i had in it- only taking the necessary things- and then i had an even better idea
Sitting on it was my problem- and when you sit at a computer for 8+ hrs a day with a little lump in your pocket, no matter how small, it will f things up-
forget about where you carry the wallet- but when you sit down in your car, or at work, or when you get home- just pull it out and put it on your dash/desk/wherever.
just a thought

I've always carried my wallet in my front pocket....I've never found it comfortable to have it in my rear pocket and sit on it.
