rules, regs for bike racing - shifters

Hey all-
I wiped out on my bike the other day and the little cover plate on top of the 105 shifter (sitting on top of the brake lever, where it runs into the hood) is now gone. No structural damage, just the missing plate. I plan on duct taping it up. Any advice on whether this is going to keep me out of a race due to 'safety' reasons?
If it makes a difference, I'm moving to Boston within the month.
