"pull the trigger" Can't Post

is quite possibly the stupidest euphemism out there.

Oh and to keep this on topic for the tri forum, has anyone heard that Lance is doing kona in 2011 and that Chrissie Wellington is going to beat him?

Re: "pull the trigger" [Tricky Dick] [In reply to] Can't Post

pull the trigger is not a euphemism. Probably an idiom, or maybe a disphemism.

You know Lance has a custom written software program that scours the internet for any mention of his name

is there an objective way?

If I hear one more reality show contestant say that they're "on the chopping block", I'm going to throw my 7-year-old, 350lb tube TV out the window.
While we're at it, not an "idiom", but if I hear another person say "nuke-u-ler" instead of "nuclear", again, TV out the window! Damn, that irks me! Oh, and when people say they're going to "itch themselves"....you don't "itch" an "itch"...you SCRATCH an itch.

Okay, I think I've added to this thread in some sort of constructive way. :)

Don't agree. You cannot halfway pull the trigger. Perfect for any time you go all in.

For example, I am about to pull the trigger on this reply, even though I may not be considering the contextual ramifications of the word 'trigger.'

Re: "pull the trigger" [Tricky Dick] [In reply to] Can't Post

The thing with idioms is that you can often make a mountain out of a mole hill or complain until you are blue in the face but sometimes you have to let sleeping dog's lie and accept the fact that they are part of our vocabulary, even if it is irritating when people over use them.

Pull the trigger is irritating though....

It is only stupid to say if you DON'T have a tattoo of a pistol on your leg. And really, who on this board doesn't have one of those?

Nice, I think we are all on the same sheet of music. In fact, anyone of us should be able to pick up the ball and run with it.

Maybe we need an ST version of BS Bingo.

Re: "pull the trigger" [DaveRoche] [In reply to] Can't Post

Actually, if you want to split hairs...

Some pre-modern firearms (flintlocks) had two triggers, a 'set' trigger, and a well, trigger trigger.

So you probably can halfway pull the trigger. And, now that I think about it, my Sigma has an extremely long pull, to compensate for the lack of an external hammer. I frequently pull the trigger half way, re-acquire the target, then squeeze.

While we are on pet peeves... irregular verbs. Nobody pleaded to anything. They plead. Just like you didn't readed that book or leaded those people. And the room wasn't lighted with candles. It was lit, damnit.

Oh, and I don't hate fat people, just to keep this 'on target.'

Damnit, then why do we say "texted"? "Text" should be present AND past tense, don't you agree?:)

Re: "pull the trigger" [ericM35-39] [In reply to] Can't Post

Actually, it's a metaphor, albeit not very clever (this is a euphemism and omitting metaphor makes the second part of the sentence an ellipse).

Let's turn this stupid thread into a linguistic thread :-)

OK, I'll bite...

It's SHERBET, not SherBERT. Say it right and don't add in the extra R at the end. And learn the difference between Then and Than. And damnit, if one more person says "irregardless". And I don't care what the NEW dictionaries say, "often" is pronounced with a silent "t".

This is fun. I feel a lot better, even though I'm expecting someone to correct me.
