lumbar multifidus exercises
I am looking for some ideas to exercise the multifidus gently other than the 'pull your leg out of mud' action.

I am having difficulty activating it.

Any ideas?

Here's a couple:

The key is holding a steady contraction through the exercise.

A great multifidus exercise is called pointer dog. You start on your hands and knees then you contract your abs (sucking your belly button towards your spine). Then extend your right arm and left leg together while maintaining the contraction in your abs and not holding your breath. Hold this position for 5 seconds then come back to the start position and then extend the left arm and right leg together and hold for 5 seconds. Do this on both sides ten times. When you extend your leg out extend it out straight instead of extending in up in the area. Your leg torso and arm should be in a straight line. One great book for more back and core exercises is Core performance essentials. I am a physician and a certified strength and conditioning specialist as my background in case you were wondering.
