how should a RACE DIRECTOR respond to this? Can't Post

keeping this anonymous, please let me know how you would respond, as i'm still laughing.

regarding an upcoming triathlon; yes this is from a female:

I can't compete in an event such as this in the forcasted temperature. The
swim, being first, will cause me to bike / run with wet hair, even with a
swin cap...my hair is very long. Is there any way to refund, or credit my
application fee?
Please let me know ASAP
Thanks,
xxxxxxxx

Wow is all I can say. I'm not sure I could answer an email like this without sounding sarcastic and mean.

Some of the things I'd say.
1) You could tell her she could always cut her hair (problem solved).
2) Ask her if she was planning on not sweating and how she was going to keep her hair dry in the event she did break a sweat.
3) Tell her that being on the bike will act like a hair dryer and blow dry her hair (problem solved).

just treat it like an unexcused request.
yeah, it's funny... but allowing people to transfer their fee to future races can earn you some good will.

Of course, please do the course on Friday (in any order) prior to the event and then send me your results immediately following.

Then DQ her for drafting : )

That type of creativity and humor deserves to be rewarded. I say offer a refund.

As far as I know, there is nothing in the rules about drying your hair in T1. I wouldn't supply power or a dryer, though. An idiot like that will no doubt electrocute themselves and sue the RD.

Re: how should a RACE DIRECTOR respond to this? [oc3ram] [In reply to] Can't Post

"Dear Mr. So-N-So,

Because we recognize your "special needs", we have installed electrical outlets for you to use a hair dryer upon exiting the water in T1. You will find the outlets right next to the warm bucket of water we have placed for you to wash your feet when entering T1 from the sand. We have also added oompa loompa's next to your transition area to not only strip off your wetsuit for you, but help you get ready for the bike. Halfway thru the course, we have Lance Armstrong ready to take over for you should you feel tired and need a break. Just please remember to "tag" him by slapping him on the ass so you are not penalized for an unsportman-like "reach around" or improper "relay". The run is completely optional. After everyone finishes, we will hand you a battery powered collar, er, I mean medal for your achievements. Everytime you wear your medal in public, you will feel the "jolt" of pride for your accomplishments.

We look forward to seeing you at the race, we know if will be electrifying for you!!!

Sincerely, Roch Frey and Paul Huddle"

The blowdryer is a good idea, but since it is a race, make sure you get her one that will get the job done in a hurry:

1100 degrees ought to do the job in a hurry.

Re: how should a RACE DIRECTOR respond to this? [oc3ram] [In reply to] Can't Post

The things I have heard in the years is just funny....

But, unlike SOME RD's out there and their races - myself and many others DO give full refunds with valid reasons. I have heard dumber though...one of the best is a woman who claimed she entered the wrong race...on the wrong date...in the wrong city...in the wrong state....AFTER not showing up on race day to pick up her packet...um...no.

Offer her a solution. Suggest that she leave her swim cap on for the whole race which will keep the cold air from hitting her wet hair and thereby ensuring that she doesn't catch a cold.
