Re: 1 bottle vs 2 - behind the saddle [BryanD] [ In reply to ]

This is basically what I have now. I went from 2 bottles to 1 mainly because I was losing one of my bottles almost every ride. I also used one of the two holders for a spare kit and it actually weighted a bit more than I thought.

Since I moved to one, I havent lost anything (might have been how i set up the back) but I also realized that I dont need to be carrying on the weight of another bottle if I can avoid it. If I am changing out bottles on a race course, why do I need to have 4 bottles? Right now I have two on the inside, one on the back. I rotate between the two on the inside and my aero bottle up front based on what I want for that race. This setup for the back is perfect for me. I only need two or three bottles max on my bike at a time for the races. Training I usually just have 3 (with the rear on always.)

I also use the Delta 400 and MultiStrike. Prior to my last IM, I decided to check my CO2 canisters and found that I could not remove them from the MultiStrike by hand. A set of pliers did the trick, but of course I do not want to bring pliers with me in the event that I need the CO2 canisters. Just wondering ifothers have had the same issue and what have they done to alleviate the problem. Maybe putting something on the threads of the CO2 canisters before attaching to the MultiStrike?

I was spending a lot of time thinking about this myself ahead of IMChoo coming up, but once I realized aid stations were every 15 miles or so and they're handing out 24-oz bottle of G Endurance I think I've decided to only run my BTA bottle cage. Then I may be able to get my two gel flasks in my jersey pocket (DeSoto Carrera) and I have the option of my saddle bag or a bento for the flat kit.

Am I crazy to just run one bottle cage? Considering I'm BOP and expect a bike time of 6:45-7:00 (16.5-17 mph) I'm grabbing 24 oz of fluid every 53-55 minutes.

Interesting. Is it that the CO2 canisters are up against your saddle or are they getting stuck in the actual CO2 holders on the multi-strike?

They were stuck in the multi-strike holders. I initially hand tightened the CO2 cartridges. Maybe over time dust/moisture got in there and made it impossible to remove the cartridges by hand. After removal with pliers I reinstalled them but more loosely. This resulted in rattling over bumps. I find myself reaching back periodically when riding on rough roads to make sure they have not loosened up further. I would think that putting some sort of lubricant on the CO2 threads prior to installation would do the trick. BTW, I am really happy with the Delta 400/Multi-Strike combo.

After a few weeks of using the Delta 400/Multistrike, I wouldn't go back to a 2 bottle carrier. I'm super happy with this setup!

Hey Scott, Thanks. Will take a look at that internally and see if we can come up with a trick to avoid that!

I have a P2 as well and it came with an Arundel "flounder" bottle on the down tube. It's worthless as a bottle but you can cut it on the bottom flat edge, tape the edges with duct or electrical tape and then put tools/tubes in there.
