I just picked up one of these from their office on my trip to Chicago this weekend. It was good to have a chat with Andre about his thoughts on the matter. For me personally, the sun protection is a huge benefit as I tend to fry pretty easily. Current plan is to definitely race with it for fulls and wetsuit legal 70.3s. Am doing some aero testing in March with it to see what the gains are for me and will see if it makes sense to have put it on in T1 for non wetsuit 70.3s. Very comfortable top and looks pretty darn good as well.

Have you or are you planning to swim in it under a wetsuit? I have done IM swims in both a PI Octane and a Fusion Sports Speed Suit under my wetsuit, both short sleeved, both times with arm coolers on as well. I didn't feel like it was restrictive. This sort of kills two birds with one stone.

And what would it be like for running. Would it be similar to arm coolers?

Ahhh I see what you meant now. I think it's the Spyder to be honest. You can see it underneath the Konda Wings as well. Brad, please respond haha!

Well since no one alerted me of this post, sorry it took so long to respond.

- The original photo from ST with Jodie was from earlier in the week, I believe Wednesday or Thursday. Of note, in that picture I am in my race kit underneath, which is the Spider Long Course Suit. I also raced with a prototype AEROZ bottle rather than the Speedfil.

- In Garys photos that he posted and the photos from the photo shoot, I was wearing the Spider 2 piece option, with shorts only and the Konami top. My kit had Kiwami and ISM on the side legs so they didn't want that in the photos.

- On race day I wore the Kiwami Spider LD suit. For the swim I had a ROKA Swimskin over it. The Spider has a few pockets on the legs and side which I believe would catch water, I have not tested it just swimming, but really like the ROKA Swimskin so swam with that over the suit. The previous 3 years in Kona I swam with a Kiwami Amphibian over the Kiwami Konami.

**NOTE I HAD A PROTOTYPE OF THE TOP, PRODUCTION MODELS HAVE HAD CHANGES MADE TO THEM**

- For the bike, I wore the Kiwami Spider LD suit with the Kona Wings over it. I put it on it T2, with the assistance of a volunteer. As Gary noted rolling up the sleeves beforehand and then sliding your arm through and then rolling them down seemed to work well for the other 2 athletes that were testing but not well for me. I just slid my arms through and had the volunteer help out. I zipped it up while running to my bike.

- 3 weeks later I raced in Lanzarote without and help from volunteers. Took me around 1.5mins to get it on. I really struggled with it, but I did not dry off like I did in Kona and I did not have volunteers to help.

- The suit give great sun protection, I had torn the seam in Lanzarote on the lower arm and there was a small hole in the top. That small area got sun burnt while the rest of my arms were fine.

- When the suit is wet it feels really really cool. When it is dry, it does not feel hot, but it does not have the "cooling" effect like when it is wet. However, I have only raced in it twice.

- The full zipper was definitely one of the improvements over the Castelli Stealth which I wore in 2013.

- The updates that I am aware of that were made to the top were better/stronger stitching and the wrist area was improved for ease of getting the top on.

I am glad to be supported and sponsored by Kiwami USA and to be able to do testing for Kiwami France. They have been a tremendous help over the past 3 years and I am excited to continue to work with them. They have really looked into this long sleeve technology and I am glad they are pushing ahead and continuing to develop products with the trends of the market. I have yet to get the top in a wind tunnel or on the track for testing, but I was really impressed with the fit and the design overall.

Thanks for chiming in Brad! I know it's a great relationship with you for Kiwami, as they have such a solid background in the sport from a racing perspective. Craig, Helene, and Andre bring pretty impressive resumes to the game as athletes, and are now pouring their knowledge and passion into giving us great gear. This top further enhances their line of awesome clothing. We all appreciate your feedback.

Yes, I plan on swimming with it under the wetsuit for the races I use it for. I haven't decided on the run yet. Will see after a few training runs in the heat.

it's a question of maximum aero benefit. also it plays well into sun protection and also cold protection: IM Florida 2014, for ex.

now, we'll have a short-sleeves version later on.

I received my kona wings aero jacket the other day. Initial impressions are great. Fits great (tight, minimal wrinkles when hunched over, feels comfortable, and isn't restricting). I was really impressed with the quality of material and seams. Going to test it on a few rides in the near future. I like that it's long sleeve as I'm doing IMTX so sun protection will be beneficial.

I'm now tempted to order the spider ld1.... Decisions decisions

By the way the best top is the Fusion http://www.fusionsportsusa.com/...ion/fusion-speed-top which came out a few years ago and is fantastic. Jordan Rapp actually wore it during California 70.3 last year on the bike.

When you make claims like that it usually helps to have data that backs that up. Interesting that you point out that Jordan wore it for Oceanside, yet he was in LG for IMAZ..................

Not sure if you work for Fusion, but think it is pretty bad to come onto a thread about a Kiwami product and hijack it to promote another product................

Raced in the Spider LD1 since June. Great suit and will be racing in it again for 2015, look in my signature block for a small discount on Kiwami gear.

Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone has tried swimming with this under a wetsuit yet and how they found it? Was it too restrictive around the shoulders or did it feel okay?

+1 on this question plus: any thoughts on use for a cooler weather race? I'm thinking about race strategies for Tahoe. I'll certainly need something with sleeves, I just worry that this suit wouldn't provide enough warmth.

Tomfromoz,

Maybe Matt has tested it under a wetsuit by now, but I have not. I will say that when it is zipped up it is "tight" which is what you want. When unzipped, which is how I would recommend swimming in it, I don't think it would be a problem. I would just suggest testing it before trying it in a race.

Of note: I previously had the Castelli T1 Stealth and I did swim in that with no problems.

Deh20,

I am pretty sure that it will eventually dry after the swim if you chose to swim with it. But if it is going to be a colder day I would suggest not swimming with it and drying off in T1 and then putting on the top. Both races I used it in last year the temps were in the mid 70's to high 80's. I am traveling the next few weeks but will be back to the UK mid February and could take it out and test it then, I am sure the weather will be crappy enough to inform you if it keeps me warm ;)

we indeed thought of the benefits the Kona Aero Wings would provide and it includes protection against the elements. the fabric is water repellent. so when it rains or it's a bit nippy, it will protect you quite efficiently. we had 1 athlete wearing a prototype at IM Florida this past November (pretty brrrrr weather) and he loved his Kona Wings.

if you have any questions, do not hesitate; always glad to help.

Any idea when the men's Kona Wings Aero Jacket in medium will be available? It appears that only XS and S are currently available on your website.

Apologies in advance if this is a bad question but couldn't you just swim in the top and keep it unzipped to release any tension in the chest/shoulder area?

@BW_Tri had answered this pretty well.
Suggested unzipping would help with shoulder tightness - but you may want to look into testing it before race day.

I just placed an order for these.
Pretty excited but thinking I may run in these and roll up the sleeves on the run.
Unzip a bit too.

Testing first to see where we end up.
