I snuck in a KQ at Whistler last year with a 4.1w/Kg FTP on a crap swim (1:10) and "meh" run (3:20).
I'm a few weeks away from seeing if a 4.4 will get me a slot at IMChoo.

That helps a ton! What was your run split?

Ran 3:40 and felt reasonably good doing it

W/kg is definitely not the best metric for any course that isn't heavy elevation-wise. I'm at around 4w/kg, but I weigh 93-94kg... my absolute power is enough that I can comfortably and consistently beat smaller guys with a similar power. Head to my favorite tri course (~1,500ft elevation over 20 miles) and I suffer relatively, but most IM courses don't have that kind of elevation gain.

You are 2 numbers: W/kg and W/m^2 . The course selects the winner according to a specific proportion of these. You are right, its a mixture but I think many here are missing the fact that running is a purely power to weight sport (watts of linear propulsion/kg). So if your aerobic system is capable of 5 w/kg on the bike and you put in the time in running to train yourself to high efficiency then you should be able to do ~5w/kg at threshold on the run. Of course there are many other factors: nutrition, pacing, aero, body temp control etc. but I would wager that w/kg on the bike charted with finishing time would produce a pretty tight correlation at the pointy end of the field.

2 data points:
At Switzerland: FTP was 4.7watt/kg (bike split was 4:57, run 3:11)
At Utah: FTP was 4.6watt/kg (bike split was 5:17, run 3:35)
Both courses feature a lot of climbing and I kept the power more controlled at Switzerland which allowed me to run better. Utah was a shock (the run anyways).
