anyone tried tubeless clinchers yet? Can't Post

I'm thinking about converting my Specialized trispokes over to a tubeless setup. Anyone else tried it??

I tried tufo tubular clinchers on some training wheels in the hopes they would be more durable than clinchers. Even with the sealant they weren't anymore durable. Also they are a little bigger folded up than a tubular or 2-3 spare tubes so there is that problem to contend with. In the event of a flat they are slower to change than a tubular or a clincher because you have to seat the lip of the rim inside each channel on the tire. I didn't find the ride to be any better than a clincher.

I'm not talking about the Tufos. Hutchinson has a road tubeless system out, similar to the off-road tubeless system developed by Mavic / Hutchinson a few years ago. The tire itself looks like a regular clincher, but no tube is required.

The Hutchinsons supposedly have about 30% less rolling resistance than a clincher, and better grip since they can be run at lower pressures.

I guess that depends on what clincher you're comparing it to...and what tube is in it ;-)

AFM tested the tubeless Hutchinsons...despite measuring pretty wide for a labelled 23c tire (25mm) they had a Crr that can only be described as "less than stellar" (~equivalent to .

The width of those things will also be an issue if you're running them on H3s. You'll be giving up gobs of aero advantage on those wheels if you run a wide tire. They REALLY perform better with a much narrower tire.

Here's my "hot tip" for an H3 tire...the Bontrager 19C Aero TT. It's very narrow, has the "aero lip", the Crr is on par with a Pro2Race, and IME they're pretty durable. Just a thought...

Everything old is new again... I had a pair of 700x19mm Michelins with the "aero lip" about 15 or 20 years ago.

And they were probably pretty fast on a set of trispokes too ;-)

Also, at my weight (~175) anything narrower than a 23 makes me a little nervous, but I like my trispokes too much to give them up.

I ran the Tufo tubular clinchers on my Specialized tri spokes for many years. They seemed very durable to me, except when I would hit a rock and blow out the side wall : (

I never raced them but trained on them for about 5 years. I used the narrow ones, 19m and I weigh in at 180.

So like tubulars you ahve to carry a full spare tire if you flat?

175 isn't that heavy.

the stans notubes system uses a latex sealant.. most punctures will reseal themselves fairly quickly... You can always carry a spare tube as well, just in case.

I didn't have great luck with narrower tires in the past. I gave up a lot more time standing on the side of the road repairing a puncture than I gained by running a narrower tire, I can guarantee you that..

I just looked at the Hutchinson website, the road tubeless is also supposedly available in a 700x21 (Atom Road Tubeless). That might be a good compromise for me, if it is actually available anywhere.
