aero wheel opinions

what's the most-bang for your non-disc aero-wheel buck? to be clear: i'm looking for a set of economy aero wheels. i imagine a disc is out of my price range. further, i know little of the aero-wheel market and am hoping some of you may shed some light on some less-well known products.
awesome!

Best bang for your buck and probably the fastest combination on the road is a rear disc coupled with a Hed front.
I have a Renn and have been nothing but pleased with its performance. The Hed wheel is also very well known and regarded.
A rear renn will run you about $320 and a Hed fron maybe $300-400.
I'd seriously look at the renn and couple it with something like a hed trispoke or similar.
It's not as much as you may think.

AFAIK, the disc is the most aero followed by a trispoke and then Hed Deep 90. The aero data for these three wheels is available for comparison on the Hed website.

In a couple weeks I'll be selling a set of Spinergy Tiliums with maybe 400 miles on them. They were brand new at Ironman CDA, raced there, raced at 4 local sprints, an oly and two or three training rides of less than 50 miles each. They will go cheap.
They are great wheels, but I am going to tubulars this year.

Renn is probably the most inexpensive disk, Check out Hed or possibly Real design wheels you will probably get the most bang for your buck. You may consider buying used.

I actually have real wind tunnel data that says that a HED Trispoke is no faster in most conditions and only marginally faster then a HED Jet in some conditions, ie head winds, side winds.

someone has to say it..
http://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?page=8&description=Wheel+Cover&vendorCode=CHAERO&major=1&minor=24
the CH wheel cover is $60, and I suspect is aerodynamically indistinguishable from a real disk wheel. Get this for the rear, and a deep section carbon front wheel off ebay for the front, and you could probably get away with less than $250 for the set.
Or, going new, get a Hed 3 front for $360 from the closeout page,
http://www.hedcycling.com/closeouts/
The Hed3 front and disk rear is one of the fastest if not the fastest combos..

Yep - even cheaper to make your own disc cover. (Just search here - Ken posted a great howto somewhere)
A Hed Jet or Deep on Ebay won't set you back much at all.
And if you really want dimples, take it out for a 'cross ride! ;)

so how bad is .031-.035" runout? is that something you would expect when buying a used wheel anyway?

The data on HED's website would indicate the exact same thing.

From the Excel catalog, comment by a "satisfied customer"
"no mounting problems on this rim, but I could see where it would be a difficult fit on any rim taller than this."
So if one were going to go the CH route, is there a limit to rim depth in using these?

My understanding (having never used the product) is that they mount "best" on traditional box rims, or rims with only a small aero profile (CPX-22/33/Open Pro). I'm pretty sure they're only available in 700c, as well.

I had trouble getting a perfect fit on an open pro - I'd stick to box rims.

a set of the specialized tri-spokes off ebay. It may not say Hed or be quite as light, but still just as fast. Very economical way to go fast.

If you ride 650's, I think you could find some outstanding deals on used wheels. Based on what I saw a the Velo News bike swap in Denver last Fall.
I saw Hed tri-spoke for less than $200 and bought my disc for under $300.
I saved info from a a couple of racers for future reference if you need the info. One of them was sponsored by Spinergy and had new wheels that they didn't need anymore. Great deal, just not what I need right now.

I'd second the Renn recommendation, as I ride one for all my races. $400 is a pretty good price for a good disk. For the front, I'd recommend the Velocity Spartacus 20 spoke. Don't go for the 16 spoke, it's a wee bit flexy, but for $150 you can't beat the wheel. I have a Hed Jet65, a Spinergy Tillium and the Velocity 16 spoke. The best of the bunch (aero and ride) is the Tilum, but for value the Spartacus is excellent. I actually ride it for all my training because it is so much less harsh than the 32 hole Open Pro I originally bought for that purpose.

This set of wheels costs $340, Front wheel is a Hed CX, $165 off of Ebay with a good tire, the rear is a Monocote disk - Velocity rim - Dura Ace hub - Tufo tire, cost about $175 total. I don't think you can get much cheaper than this.
