You have all missed one of the most experienced and knowledgeable coaches out there.
That is
Dr John Hellemans
. He is from Holland originally but has been living in New Zealand(N.Z) for some time now. He actually coached several of the guys you have named above and they learned the coaching trade from him also to a certain degree.
He is still going strong to this day and I did a training camp with him only two weeks ago. It is the second camp i have done with him and it is inspiring.
He is well planned in his approach and and it is backed up with science and reality. He did most of the rides with us and watched over the swim and run.
He used to coach Erin Baker when she won Kona and at present coaches most of N.Z's elite ITU triathletes. He has won the world title in olympic distance for his age for many years now and even did an ironman in 2004. It was the only ironman he did and he went under 10hours at 53 years old.
He has the experience and knowledge to match the likes of Dave Scott.
But to be fair John has concentrated more on olympic distance than ironman.
He will be running more ironman camps in future.
I didn't write too much of the details of what we covered in the recent camp on the link below because some of the best coaching was hands on stuff. That is we were talked through a technique then put it into practise in a training exercise. Then corrected during the exercise, if we were still not right.

However as I said my blog on it doesn't do justice to how good it was.
I believe they will be running more camps in future, for ironman at the end of November annually and for elite ITU athletes in about February.
At the above link you will find a link to the altitude training camps he is involved with. Because N.Z is a very small country the training groups are often small and this means the individual touch can come through. It is the best value by far from what I see(even taking into account airplane tickets).
He is putting out a new edition of his book in a year or so also.
I have experienced Gordos training for a day and also Mark Elliot(Bevan Docherty's coach) for about 5 months so that is what I am making comparison to. Also I used both John's and Dave Scott's books many years ago and found them to be both equally as good.
Am sure even some of the up and coming pro's could benefit from a training camp with him. His wife is the N.Z olympic teams nutritionalist and she is usually about as well.
He was given a year long scholarship by the N.Z government a few years back to put all the knowledge of triathlon training together and do further research, which is being used to help N.Z's triathletes as well. Looking forward to reading a copy of this research also, as he's posting me a copy.
All the above sounds a bit promotional, but I really have nothing to gain. Just wanted everyone to know that great advice is out there if you go looking for it.
Oh yeah, he still works as a sports doctor when not training triathletes which is useful background knowledge for a coach.

This is a total troll. But I'll feed you. Brett Sutton is probably #1. Paulo Sousa has a good record as well. Neither are (AFAIK) taking clients.

I think brett sutton and whoever coaches michellie jones are some of the best. I mean, a person nobody had ever heard of, wellington, won the IM world champs, I figure sutton must know his shit.

Already posted earlier that I believe John Hellemans to be as good as they get for triathlon coaches.
To begin with I just used a combination of Dave Scott's and John's books to make up a schedule for myself. They both had similar volumes in there training week and it was good to make a plan myself as I could plan it around irregular work patterns.
Another good question would have been what makes a great coach? Coaches that are aware of overtraining and try to avoid it in there athletes can save you alot of time. If you are really good then a coach who is up to date with the events/courses around the world to ensure you target the races best suited to your strengths.
At the same time I got some advice from a guy called Scott Molina on tapering and other specifics. He was really helpful and put me onto the N.Z high performance coach. He coaches Cameron Brown and some other top athletes.
The other source where I have got helpful advice over the years is a guy I knew from early on called Peter Clode. Caught up with earlier in June this year at his base in San Deigo and he was making up programs for athletes. He doesn't promote himself much as a coach but has the knowledge and alot of experience racing in the USA. Sure his advice and feedback would be invaluable and sure he would give some of it up with his programs(understand he is finishing up racing fulltime). Here is a link to his results;

It is unlikely one coach will give you all the answers however. Hamish Carter had a main coach for the Olympics but a separate swim coach. Am sure the nutritional advice would have been from specialists also. His coach back then was Chris Pilone, a guy who is now coaching Jo Lawn. Talked to Chris at the airport when leaving Beijing this year and he is still available to coach people also.

I think his point is that taking two highly motivated, extremely talented individuals and leading them to success is not exactly a miracle.
I'd give more credit to the coach's both of those athletes had when they were younger, who set them up for what they've achieved today.

brent sutton, well by email him and joining his group..... i have 2 friends that have done that recently.
as for paulo, it s not about the right talent... if it was, he would not have taken me at the first place. He as the luxury to choose people that have good personality and that he feel he would enjoy working with. He dosnt need to take anyone, but will still take on some if the connection is right.
it s like this for every coaches... there is no such things as someone that is full....

He got a trial, he took his lumps, he is very sorry - and he expressed his sorrow on this very forum 8 years ago.
He was not a chronic predator - there was only one girl among the many, many girls he coached.
And the freakiness factor is lessoned given that in some states, she is above the age of consent (15).
