Which bike for AmZof? Can't Post

Two bikes to choose from:

- Cervelo Soloist with 55/39 and 11-23, full aero front end OR
- My trusty Olmo with 52/39 and 12/25, no aerobars, just std bars.

I love riding my Olmo - lots of miles on that set-up - but I have to decide which bike to pack in the case. I am leaning towards the Olmo, so I can do some no race-riding in comfort.

Well problemo is more 39-25 might risky for AmZof. 39-27 would be more appropriate unless you enjoy suffering :)

Hm.. good thing I do like pain. Is it worth swapping cassettes and if so, which bike? I have only so much leeway on the soloist (the 53 front plate is on order, just not here alas).

If possible, I'd opt for the Soloist. Much of this course is aerobar friendly.

You could temporarily swap the 53 from the Olmo onto the Soloist.
I'd also seriously consider picking up a 12-26 or better yet, 12-27.

Go to www.qbike.com and shop around a bit.

x2 on ML's recommendation. I'm an AmZof virgin, but I know some of these guys who are returning vets....if they say 12-27...that means a LOT to me. So I added a 12-27 cassette to my stable and it will make its way to AmZof.

Swap the 53 ring to the Soloist as well. No need to get another ring...you already have one. Easily swapped when you clean the drivetrain this week.

Same with the aero front end...if these guys say aerobars are ok...they probably are. That said...I did swap my Hed aerobars out on my Talon SL to a road setup with classic bend road bars, STI, and Hed Clip lites. My actual position is the same....just road bars. (Think Wellington's P2C setup this summer). But my ulterior motive is to leave the Talon as a road bike, and prep for a new P3 over the winter ;-)

39x25 is really pushing it. I rode 5 hours flat and I am an above average climber and I cracked a little bit on the last lap with this. Murph is pretty much a top AG biker and he uses a 27. Unless you are going to be an 8 hour or under finisher you are going to need at least a 27.

There is quite a lot of flat and downhill in this race, you are going to want the soloist. Riding a straight up road bike will cost you a lot of time. Stick with the soloist.

What is with the 55? You have been reading too many Bjorn threads on ST.

LOL yeah long story, I bought this bike from Francois and that's what it had on it. It's great for largely flat courses I tell ya. I've been planning on swapping out for 53, but the 55 is a Tiso TT plate and I'd like to replace it with same, that is, with a 53t Tiso TT as well. Gotta find one of those.

Also, Olmo = Campy; Soloist = Shimano. I will go pick up a new cassette & chain for the Soloist today I think. Been meaning to do that regardless (she's due).

If you remove the 55 and put something smaller, you have to send the bike back...
You should have read the fine prints. :P

Ahhh, now that makes more sense. It's a circus clown bike, and the wheels aren't any bigger than the 55 chainring.

Too bad it doesn't come w/ Francois's old engine too.

(He must've sold that to somebody else, since he's apparently not in possesion of it anymore... ;-)

If you know what is good for you, you will adjust your front derailleur so that you can't even use the big ring. Don't waste energy pedaling on the big ring. I thought 40x28 was fine last year--on the first lap. By the third lap I barely made it up the last steep hill. Definately get a 27 and use it early and often. I went as far as going with a 36 this time around and think 36x28 will be just about right.

Swapped out the cassette on the Soloist for 12-25, picking up a 52t ring today. It'll have to do.

<whimper> If Chad is having trouble on the 3rd lap, I can only imagine what kind of pain I'm in for. Frown
