What is your mantra when the going gets tough?
Can't Post
So what do you folks say to yourselves deep within the race and things start to get ugly and the hurt is on?
My new mantra is "What would Simon do?". But I could use some others. :)

A few things:
In an iron I think, "The faster I go now the sooner I can lay down."
Other ones: "pain now for pleasure later" and "I signed up to see how fast I could go on the day.. don't be such a friggin wuss!"
I also have a secret desire to see if I can make my heart explode, so far no luck!

At the 5K mark in the Peterborough Half IM run.....
Shut the F up and Run, b*tch!
Worked wonders for me. Think the aid station volunteers thought I was a little off though :)
I tend to bribe myself with DQ Blizzards when the going gets tough.

A quote or paraphrase from the Jack London book "Call of The Wild"
"I am a leader and a leader must lead."
Now, I am never in the lead when I use this phrase. I do not use it to mean I must win or actually lead the race. I use it as "this is what I am and this is what I do" - "I am a triathlete (or cyclocrosser, mtb racer, runner, father, attorney, husband, etc.) and this is what I do."
Sometimes I use it as "this is what I am and this is what I MUST do."
Back to "Call of the Wild" - I also really like the mental picture of Buck (the dog) pulling with everything he has to break the loaded sled free from the iced street as John Thornton calls out to him from the finish line.

My two favorite mantras come from one of my favorite Metallica songs - "Creeping Death."
1. "Motherf***er, I shall pass," which I say out loud when I'm in a bad patch. It helps me remember that the bad times come, but they ALWAYS pass as well. It encourages me to stick with it when things are tough, cuz it always get better.
2. "I rule the midnite air." I sing this out loud to myself in a 24-hour race (or similar) when it's the middle of the nite and I'm really tired.
3. "You've gotta get comfortable with being uncomfortable."

Right after I said that, I had a much better attitude and throughly enjoyed the rest of the run course!
By no means did I have a stellar run time but I had fun slogging through it.

Tigerchick,
You posted this once before (maybe a year and a half ago). I hope you don't mind, but I stole it and have been using is as my own since then. The "suck it up" part gives me the kick in the ass that I need, and the "princess" makes me giggle - I'm a (straight) dude.

A few more.
I often think "ABC" which means "Always by cycling/circling" when I need to simply keep pedaling or need to lift the pace.
I also have one I lifted from a Dr. Ken Leistner article in Milo (a weightlifting/strength journal) = "Flail against the specter of mediocrity."
Last one - the word "Revolution" thought over and over and over.

You most certainly are not one of them.A serious mantra is one that Ray Browning gave us all in 1994 at the carbo for IMC.He told us to just repeat "yes,yes,yes,yes,yes,-over and over again. It actually works.
The two I actually use, depending on how I'm feeling are:(again in time with my breathing)
"I am not tired" - over and over for hours.
and
"It does not hurt" -over and over until the hurt goes away.
