What has IM done to me? Can't Post

I signed up for IMWI after 18 months of doing tri's. I worked out all summer and swore the entire time that next year I wouldn't being training for another IM! It took over my life! No bars! No junk food! No spare time! Never enough sleep! Always tired! I won't lie and say that I never cheated, never had a drink or a bowl of ice cream, but I was pretty well behaved! Here's my problem...after fearing the swim for Oct-July(my confidence became stronger after Racine in July on the swim) I began to fear the run instead. But on race day I really enjoyed the swim, made it through the bike 29 minutes slower then planned, but the crowd was so incredibly awesome in Madison that my marathon went from a planned five hour run down to 4:12. It was so incredible that I signed up again for next year!!!

So my question is, "Am I hooked, am I locked into this life of healthy foods, spandex, aero bikes, Slowtwitch blogs, and living in a messy house because I'm always too tired to clean it(feel free to add anything I missed)? And don't get me started on trying to date! Am I doomed to endless training for IM after IM? And if so, is it reallythat bad?"

Yep, you're doomed!

You really want to know how much....? Try doing a local oly race, the atmosphere that you once though was great will now feel crap and only an IM race will do it for you.....

IM is as addictive and costly (physically, financially and mentally) as a class A drug.

Just don't get the tatoo!!!!

Welcome to the club :)

No - when you make it to Hawaii you're going to look at the waves and say you yourself: "fuck this shit... I'm getting a surfboard"

Re: What has IM done to me? [Horsepower] [In reply to] Can't Post

I also did IMWI for the first time after completing Racine. I also had an extra great experience and signed up for next year. But as I reflect on what I learned from the experience, one of the big lessons is that--if I want to continue to do Ironman distance events--I need to maintain the balance in my life. I get that you are hooked, but I think you have to be careful not to let it get too much of you. It may not be a popular thing to say on this website, but there is more to life, and you can have it while training for IMWI.

looks like you figured it out... check the ego on the bike split and actually enjoy (and actually run) the run.

I agree. I think that I learned a lot as far as needing balance and being able to train a little smarter so I don't lose sight of the important things in my life; children, rest, work, etc. I just thought that after doing one I could walk away and just do half's. Maybe next year???

Re: What has IM done to me? [Horsepower] [In reply to] Can't Post

I did IMLP in 07 and did not do one in 08 even though I signed for an indy one (instead I did the half). I have American Zofingen Long Course next weekend and this as close as it will get this year.

No plan to do an IM in 09 (unless I change my mind and try to "qualify" for IMLP @ Muskoka) maybe an indy one.. so we will see how things eveolved.

Trying to be as close as possible to 4h30 in a 1/2 IM seems a lot more fun to me than doing an IM for now..

Re: What has IM done to me? [Horsepower] [In reply to] Can't Post

I did two in a row, Lake Placid '05 and Canada '06. Took '07 off of IM training, did a half at the beginning of the season then kicked back. Did a bunch of sprints and olys. I had a great time. I came back to IM this year and did CdA. Had a great time. I loved it. Set an overall PR and a 21 minute PR on the run.

I didn't sign up for one next year as I have other goals but what this taught me is that if I ever get back into it I'll do one every other year. The off years are great for other things, to have fun with other distances and to give my mind a break. It needs one, often.

IM is addictive but racing healthy and for fun is just as addictive.

Re: What has IM done to me? [Horsepower] [In reply to] Can't Post

Glad to hear you had a great year. I did IMWI as well, but it didn't go as nice as yours even though I finished in 12:25. I guess it is all a matter of what your goals are and how the day plays out. No IM next year, but plan for IMWI in 09.

BTW, how was Racine? I might make that my A race for next year. Then all I have to do is keep my self motivated for the rest of the summer.

HAHA! Imagine this: you get fully sucked in, having started tri 8 years ago just for the hell of it, remake yourself physically in the past 3 years, LOVE IM... and can't do anything over an OLY for 2-3 years due to school. I talked to a couple friends back home- they're signed up for '09, are prepping to crush it at the Chicago marathon in a week, and I'm just trying to not get fat. 2010-2011 will be brutal, as they'll be so much stronger than I will be, but damn I miss the whole lifestyle!

There's a 12-step program for that, I'm sure. Or a patch. Made of Ti and CF. ;-)

I gave it up cold turkey.

Your stuck for a couple of years at least... my prediction.... eventually something else will become a priority and getting to the pool, on the bike or out for a run will become more and more difficult... At least that's what has happened to me. I had a good 6 year run at this triathlon thing, but right now my children, my work, my home are all ahead of triathlon and sport.

Enjoy it while it lasts...

Re: What has IM done to me? [Horsepower] [In reply to] Can't Post

I think I see a business opportunity here. I hereby announce the opening of my official "Ironman Addiction Rehab Center". The cost? $575 a week, the same as the entry fee for an IM. The rehab? We start you in week one at full IM training volume and slowly wean you down to less and less volume each week. We also take away your laptop and credit card so you have no chance of signing up for any IM's while in our care.
I'll have to work on this idea! :)
Seriously, yes, it's fun and addicting. I did the same as you and did my first IM 18 months after starting in the sport and love it, but I have two little ones, so I remind myself that I do this for fun and the challenge, rather than for a living, so I try to work the training miles around my family as best I can. Good luck!

Am I doomed to endless training for IM after IM?

For three-to-six years.

Then things will look very different.

Most likely.

I will be your first customer. As for the OP. Dude, you are toast.
I just finished my third season of training and racing triathlons and have completed 2 IMs, 8 halfs, 8 Olys and 2 sprints.

Re: What has IM done to me? [christian1] [In reply to] Can't Post

Racine was a great race! The water was the coldest water thaI've ever swam in or hope to ever swim in, but like most swims once I got going it was fine. They handed out penalties on the bike like they were handing out candy, so be careful not to do anything to give them an excuse to get ya! It made me paranoid on the bike for IM, but IM was a little more relaxxed. All in all though it was a great race. I'm doing it again next year!

I gather you're single... How do you feel about staying that way for another 5 years? 10? Adding a spouse would certainly change the IM training/travel equation, kids even more so.
