Weekend Ride in Pictures - Kitchen Creek Rd/Mt. Laguna
Can't Post
I have ridden almost every good riding road in the San Diego County area (and posted pictures of them here), there are still a couple that I have yet to explore. This past weekend I crossed one of those roads off the list, Kitchen Creek Road in the eastern part of the county. Normally when I ride up Mt. Laguna I take Sunrise Highway, but this time I decided to finally explore Kitchen Creek as an alternative route to the top of Laguna. The thing that is nice about Kitchen Creek Rd is that it is a single lane, nicely paved road that is closed to car traffic for about 8 miles of the 15 miles or so of climbing.
the beginning of the climb on the still open road
the view looking back. Three years ago this whole area was engulfed in flames and the scars are still showing
looking back at the road just travelled
looking ahead to the next part of the climb, now on the closed portion of the road
getting closer to the top now, just above the 5000ft level
view from near the top looking back to the east towards Arizona
after Mt. Laguna, it is on towards Julian along Sunrise Highway, another view of the desert mountains to the northeast
after going through Julian, we looped back south again through Pine Hills, Eagle peak and Engineers Road. More burned out areas this time looking to the southwest
total of 76 miles of riding and 8200ft of climbing for the day.

Hey Mike...thanks for the pics!
Starting at Japatul Valley road --> old hwy 80 (I think) --> Kitchen Creek --> Sunrise hwy --> Left on...79? back to Japatul Vally Rd is my most favorite loop/ride in San Diego. Wish I could get out there more often...thanks for sharing the pics...I've never taken any along the way.

on your loop, after you make the left on Hwy 79, you go about a mile or so and then you'll come up on Engineers Road on your right (by Lake Cuyamaca). You should ride that to the right on Boulder Creek Rd, left on Eagle Peak the left on Pine Hills Rd back out to Hwy 79. At that point you'll be about a mile west of Julian. Going that direction through there is easier then the reverse so you can either turn around and double back, or go through Julian and come all the way back on 79 to Descanso. That one section is spectacular. It is also an Eagle nesting area. This past weekend we didn't see any, but the week before when I rode through there I saw two Golden Eagles. We did have a deer jump across the road at one point and saw a flock of wild turkeys along Engineers Rd.
