Water Polo as an alternative to swimming laps?
Can't Post
Anyone do this. I am not a big fan of swimming laps but there is a beginner water polo league here.

It is not the same, but take advantage. You will love it. If nothing else, you will become absolutely comfortable in the water.

I did varsity waterpolo in university. One of the most intense workouts you can do!
It doesn't do much for improving your stroke, but oh how I enjoy mass starts :)
If you wanna get fast, you gotta put in the laps.

If you've got swim technique at a good level already, a mix of polo and lap swimming for a couple of months is going to really help your open water skill set in the long run. It's a good sport for teaching you to sight and swim heads up freestyle without your hips dropping, you pick up good manouvering skills for getting around buoys, and the other players will beat the crap out of you far more than any triathlon swim ever will.
Plus, it's fun and is a good mental break from straight follow the black line swimming.

It's a great workout but to be good in water polo you need to be a pretty decent swimmer. It's a great way to beat lap monotony but in the end you will have to do some laps to build speed. It would be like trying to play basketball instead of running.

Plus, you'll be sufficiently well trained in water combat that if you ever get a shark in your water, you've got a 50/50 chance of being pulled over the rest of the course by a shark that you've beaten to submission!
