Wanting To Race For A Cause
Can't Post
Instead of racing in this sport to only support my own insecurities, I am wanting to begin racing to help someone. A good friend I went to high school with's son (19 months old) was recently rushed to the hospital for unknown reasons. Upon doing a CT scan of his head and torsoe, then found a tumor that has grown at the cerebelum and wrapped itself around his spinal cord. They spent 9 hours in surgery yesterday in attempt to remove as much of it as they could. During that surgery, Elijah lost 83 ounces of blood. That's 3 times the blood in his body! Not only that, they think they only got 75% but won't know until they receive another CT scan back which means they will have to operate again. He is in the PICU now at is in rough condition. Gary said that his left side is very weak but does respond if you put your finger in his hand. They sent off a biopsy to pathology but will not hear anything back until next week. His wife is 6 months pregnant and they are hurting terribly. I'd like to look into raising awareness for cancer in young children and raise money for the cause and I'd like to do it in his name. The story is heart breaking and seriously makes me tear up when I read updates. I have a son close to his age and the thought just rips me apart inside.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for where to start something like this? I'm really unsure on how that kind of thing works.

TEAM IN TRAINING, a non profit that works with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The money you raise to enter events covers coaching, entry fees and even places to stay before races is needed. I coached a team for the honolulu century ride and was one of the best experiences I have had. Meet some very special people, some with cancer some doing what they could to find a cure and fight the good fight. There are team in training chapters all over the US, and they help people do all kinds of events, marathons, tri, centurey rides ect. If you want anymore information pm me and I get you connected with the people in your area. My wife works for the chapter in hawaii so it would be hard. Good luck and good for thinking of others first.

I have read about Team in Training and know about what they do. I'm not too impressed with the amount of funds that go to the actual charity versus administrative costs/costs to pay for your gear and trip.

LOL! You thing all the other charities any different? Charities are the "middle man" for the unfortunate people.

Send a PM to HR (Richard Pady). He started a charity called Race 4 Kids to raise money for childhood cancer treatment much like what I think you want to do. Rich has posted about it briefly on this board (you can search his posts). I don't think I'd be speaking out of turn if I said I am pretty sure he would be willing to share his experience in creating R4K with you.

x2 on Race 4 Kids. But if you're not from Ontario then feel free to give him a shout for guidance.

x3 on contacting HR. If your unable to reach him from this site try
http://www.race4kids.ca/
They are racing in IMLP again this year (I'm not sure if there are any spots left if you wanted to support it this way). If you wanted to start your own charity he would be a good person to talk to.
If you can't reach him by either of these methods PM me.
