Ultegra 6700, Red, Dura Ace??
Can't Post
Putting together a new bike, and I'm trying to decide on the component group. I have DA 9spd now, and was planning to get either Red or DA 7900. But the new Ultegra 6700 looks pretty nice, and the difference in price would probably buy me a front race wheel to go with my wheel cover on the back. Any thoughts on the new Ultegra. Thanks

The new Ultegra 6700 stuff is very similar to the Dura-Ace 7800 stuff from last year.
Is it as nice as DA 7900 or SRAM Red? No, but it costs about half the price. If money were an object and you had to choose between a nice front wheel and DA 7900 or Red - I'd get the wheel.
My groupset is almost entirely Dura-ace 7900 with the exception of cassette (Ultegra 6700) and brakes (Felt).

I agree, for a TT/Tri bike, get the ultegra. Road bike, get the RED ;) The difference in price is large and the difference in performance is minimal (i.e. brakes don't matter as much, brifters aren't and issue, even front shifting isn't done much on a tri bike).

If the choice is between DA and ULT, For the money go with ultegra, the new Ultegra is pretty sweet, but then again if you could find a full set of the Ultegra SL 10speed it may be even cheaper and you could get other stuff as well (like race wheels, or more aero gadgets...).
If you are trying to decide between SRAM and Shimano, I would probably go with SRAM because the shifters are slightly nicer (more comfortable on my hands). The only difference that I have noticed in performance is that SRAM seems to have a louder sound when shifting.
Overall I would stick with Ultegra if you want the best value, if not make the leap to SRAM Red.

Here's the 5th response recommending you to roll with Ultegra on your TT bike!

cyclingnews.com just finished their road testing for ultegra 6700. like the whole package compared to DA, but didn't like the feel the new hidden shift cables had on rear shifting. If hidden cables is a must, go sram maybe even Force and save some $$. If it's a tri bike, Ultegra X's 2. Road bike maybe try and find Ultegra SL if you can deal with exposed cables. Red if you have $$ burning a hole in your pocket and have to have the complete package
good luck

Go Dura Ace 7800, you can get closeout pricing online or ebay and put together a bike for less than new Ultegra.

Really, 105??? I already ride an aluminum frame, have aluminum bars, and have a disc cover... can't I have old DA and still be the king of cheap speed?? I would however go with 7800 cranks over 6600 cranks, there is a stiffness difference for those who mash.

i know, shameful to ride the 105 but really it works well, and even looks nice if you cover up the "105" decals

If it's for a road bike set-up and you can find DA 7800, I would go with that. I just put that on my new bike. Works like a charm. Ditto for a tri-bike.

DA 7800 would be a good choice, but I really want a compact crankset and I haven't been able to find one (not sure they even made one). I guess I could get the group, buy an FSA or some other crankset separately and sell the 7800 crankset on ebay.
