I vote Karma or KC although you've got a boatload of good karma coming your way!

I love how you were organized and composed enough to take on such an impromptu project while on a long drive home from a race. Only a triathlete could be so organized and anal (in a good way).

You are a good soul.

Good sense of humor would be to name the dog:

"Amber"

There are thousand of reasons that would have made it more appropriate to bring that dog to a kernel in the neighborhood first, and then later volunteer to adopt it after no one has come forward to claim it.
Most farm dogs don't have fancy ID tags and pick up dozends of ticks every day....

I bet I will get stoned for my insensitive post, but before you do I have to tell you that I adopted my dog from a shelter and didn't take it off the road, so:

Back off!

My vote is for "Ranger"

You can also use our present dog's names "Pal" and "Sport"

Se keep 'em simple.

I do not think your response is insensitive at all. Not in the least. We struggled mightily about whether we should pack her in the car and take her 3 states away from where we found her. It was a very difficult decision.

The first thing we did was call our vet and ask her what to do. She advised us that we could take her to the nearest police station or try to find a shelter. She further advised us that most (if not all) shelters in Kansas and Iowa are kill shelters and that many dogs at the Milwaukee Humane Society come from Kansas and Iowa, where there seem to be a proliferation of abandoned animals. We could not bear the thought of her not getting adopted and being put down, so, we could not do it.

The vet advised us that they could scan for an ID chip and would contact the owners if one was found. The Milwaukee Humane Society has shuttle runs to Kansas and Iowa, so, if the owner was located (and still wanted the dog), they could transport her back to Kansas/Missouri/Iowa. Also, the vet takes digital pictures and does a search of shelters for missing animal reports. They did that yesterday and found no such reports in the vacinity of where we found her.

We also described in detail the wear pattern on the pads and the protrusion of hip and back bone. We are no experts, by any means, but have been around rescue dogs all our lives, so we have a little knowledge. Based on our comments, the vet opined she had been out for weeks, if not months. This was verified by the vet upon visual inspection the next day.

So, I understand your response and we were thinking along the same lines. We did realize there was a risk with taking her out of the area. However, all signs pointed to dump and run and we had a plan for returning her if necessary. I still realize that we may have picked up a dog that accidently wandered away and wasn't abandoned. There may, possibly, be a family out there that lost her. But, as verified by our vet, she was in sorry shape and was not going to last much longer on her own. It was a judgment call and we acted with our hearts, possibly not our heads. We believe we made the right decision, but, realize that perhaps we did not.

So, I appreciate your response, appreciate your perspective, and do not think you should, in any way, be stoned for writing it. I understand from where you are coming. ;-)

What an awesome thing to do, and it's so great to know you handled the situation so responsibly. It's so sad how poorly some people can treat animals, so it's refreshing to know that so many people care so much about them -- enough to wash them and buy them necessities on the spot! Congrats on the new addition to your family, he's so lucky to have found you. (BTW, I like the name Karma)

Don't take me for a religious type or anything (if only ya knew), but how about

"Gracey" ??

Well, it hides the root of "Grace".
It's an amazing story...
and there is the whole subtext of the lost and found stuff too.

So it's all a little subtle and you can let people figure out the origin of the name on their own.

I think there must be a million toto's ...don't do that, too easy.

well, I wouldn't consider you the "religious type" - but you and I have the same name idea. We just lost the 2nd of our 2 Shelties (after 16 years) one month ago today, and we are already looking at other dogs and rescue. The problem is, the girlfriend wouldn't be happy with just bringing home 2 from the shelter and would feel guilty for leaving others there. What the OP did was great, and I believe the names "Gracie" (alternative spelling) and "Hope" are well suited. She looks very sweet, and I'm sure we all "hope" that she gets to live out her days in a loving environment.

Congrats to the OP and to his pup.

Just reading through the posts and wanted to give you a thumbs up for the save. We(my girlfriend and I) volunteer for boxer rescue here in Austin. Currently, we have our permanent two rescues and we are fostering one. Rescue dogs sometimes have their social issues, but they also will bond to their new owners like super glue. Somehow, they just seem to know that you saved them, and they are going to live the rest of their lives trying to thank you.

Thank you for your good deed.

We kept the little mutt and named her "Kansas."

She is doing really, really well. We kept her isolated from the other three for about a week. She has been "integrated" for about a week now. They all get along very well. They haven't really started playing together yet, but, they are starting to socialize. She is filling out nicely and her color is coming back.

I will post update pictures this weekend.
