Touareg Bike Roof Rack Can't Post

I am in need of a roof top bike rack to carry 2 bikes on my VW Touareg. I have the factory cross bars and would like to know if anyone else has a Touareg with a roof top bike carrier. Ideas....input...pictures?

Re: Touareg Bike Roof Rack [Waskesiudoo] [In reply to] Can't Post

My wife has gotten the last 3 new cars in our family. previous two were VWs one of which was a Touareg. I got tired of the constant roof rack changing. Finally went with a Thelma hitch rack. Best rack I've owned so far (others were Yakima and Rhode Gear), and easily transferable from one vehicle to another as long as there is a hitch - with four kids I don't think that is going to be a problem...

I want to stay away from the hitch racks as I will be pulling the boat to the lake when I also need to bring the bikes.

I have a hitch rack on my Touareg. I've been thinking of getting a roof rack but the car seems to sit just a wee bit too high to make it easy to get a bike on and off. Come to think of it I don't think that I have ever seen a Touareg with bikes on the roof. Hmmmm. I have a sunroof so that might be an issue anyway.

No issues with the sunroof operation when I have my skiis on the roof rack so I don't think a bike rack would cause any issues. Alot of the Thule racks bolt right up the the VW crossbars as Thule made the bars for VW. Just not sure about which model to go with.

Back when I had my touareg I used a tule roof rack. I moved both of the factory cross bars to the back and used thule footprints that attached directly to the roof rack rails. I think they were 415 or something. then got the thule fork trays and load bars. With the faring on it looked good.

go hit your local REI, they have Yakima racks on sale anything 20% off.

I've been looking for the same for my Porsche Cayenne factory rack (which I think has very similar factory cross bars to the Touareg).

So far the best option I've found is located here:
http://www.rv-inno.com/html_pages/bikes.html

I e-mailed them last week and received the following reply:

Thank you for the inquiry. Our racks will fit your crossbar however you'll need to order a long bolt kit (ISF 712) in order to fit the taller crossbars.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us.

I haven't ordered one yet and I don't know too much about Inno. A friend of mine recently bought one of the fork mount trays for his factory rack on his Toyota SUV and so far has liked it with no problems. I did read somewhere that Inno had a large market share of the Japanese vehicle rack market but I have not confirmed that.

We have a VW with Thule 2 bike rack. It works great. However you need to think about overhead clearance... Does Thule not make one for the Toureg? If not, pretty sure that VW uses Thule as their OEM bike rack manufacturer.
