Topeka Tinman is under new management Can't Post

Word in the Capitol City is that the Topeka Tinman is now under the control of Sherpa Sports (of Ironman Kansas 70.3 fame). Great news and props to Ryan and crew for wrestling control of this race away from the evil empire of KLM. And what's the defeated to do? Walk away with their tails firmly tucked............Nope....lets go down the road about twenty miles and claim we had to "move" the race due to construction in the Topeka area. SO, here in NE Kansas on June 19th you have the choice of doing the Topeka Tinman at Lake Shawnee (home of the race for eons) presented by Sherpa Sports or doing the Topeka Tinman at Lake Perry, in Perry, KS by KLM. Looks like a battle royale is a brewin' between rival companies. Should be a good summer in the KC/Topeka area for 2010.

I wonder how many people are going to sign up for one race, but show up at the other one by mistake...

I was wondering when this would hit ST! Should be interesting! Maybe the bike courses will merge into some type of figure 8 demolition derby thing - now that would make the races interesting!

My guess is that the "Real Tinman" in Topeka will be the race that people choose to enter.

Ryan will do a GREAT job of producting this event. Z

I suggest a 500 person jousting match between opposing participants. That'll narrow the field.

Congrats, Ryan, what is the link to your race. Or perhaps you know, Tom? Looks like KLM is keeping the Topeka Tinman name and website. I read the story that KLM is putting out, let's hear the real story!

Disclaimer: I don't have any insider info what so ever and this is just my best "guess" as to what the real story is, but here is my take.......Take a race with a deep history (hell the road around Lake Shawnee is Tinman Circle), run it into the ground until it begs for mercy, piss everyone off, your contract runs it's course and Shawnee County tells you to go fuck yourself and finds a new RD, you cry foul, claim you own the race, you take it down the road, slap the Tinman name and tell everyone that a construction project would not allow the race to contine at Lake Shawnee. Boy this story sound awfully familiar........"Big O" ring a bell to anyone.

MCHammers- ...geez guys I am trying to enjoy a nice quiet rainy day watching cartoons and then you guys call me out.

I normally wouldn't air laundry on ST...but midwest athletes have been jerked around long enough...and this probably tops the once untoppable Big O.

The 30th annual Topeka Tinman will take place at Lake Shawnee in 2010..as it always has.
Here is a link to the newspaper article mentioning Sherpa Sports to "manage and operate" the Topeka Tinman.
http://cjonline.com/...rning_bodies_to_meet

I quote "manage and operate" because the race belongs to the community of Topeka...not a race company. Maybe I am just a big softie but the fact that the race has been going on for 30 years...yes 30 years...in the same community means something. It has always been a community event and will continue to be so. I am proud to be a part of it and excited to leave my mark on a historic event. The thought of it being moved out of the community that built it would be a huge loss for the city and the sport.

It definately has a successful recipe.
  1. 30 years of tradition...how many other races have been going on for 30 years?
  2. a closed run course around the lake.
  3. A race named the Tinman...in Kansas none the less. This race is the Original Tinman! I can guarantee that the whole Tinman/Oz thing will be played to the tilt!
  4. The timing works out as well. 2 weeks after KS70.3...just up the road.

As far as the "real story"...I only tell stories over beer...next time you make it to Kansas we can grab that beer. It's a story that you probably already know though...

Just do a search on previous posts for both subjects. I think you will be able to assess the situation from others past experiences.

ST has a "search" option - type in KLM and the Big O and read all about them! Z

Ryan,
I can probabaly guess most of the story, but it's irrelevent I'm sure you'll get the race back on the footing it's supposed to be. As a past champion I feel like part of that race so I'm glad to see you taking over. I'm sure this will play out exactly how it should play out. Now are you going to have a race title like "The Original Topeka Tinman" or "The Topeka Tinman that is actually in Topeka". You could do a t-shirt spoof on Kentucky Friend Chicken, and use the term "Original Recipe". I will do what I can to make it to the race this year.

See you at the KCTri in May for sure!

Re: Topeka Tinman is under new management [sherpasports] [In reply to] Can't Post

Ryan, thanks for picking up this race. It's one of the first tris I ever did, 20-some years ago and I tried to get back to it as often as I could.

If this is indeed the 30th year, it'd be neat if you could get locals etc to loan you their old shirts - see if you could one from each of the 30 years displayed. I have six or eight of the older ones around somewhere I'd donate.

I'll try to contact you next time I know in advance I'll be in KC. I'd love to hear the inside scoop. Beers on me.

I like the T-shirt idea...I have a few hideous ones in my bike rag bin that I have never thrown away. My brother raced the race for years back in the speedo days...I will have to hit him up and see if he has any from the "80's.

It would be great to have you back at the Tinman to defend your crown...

You may have your work cut out for you in 2010 though. Simon Lessing will be racing the Topeka Tinman in 2010.

Re: Topeka Tinman is under new management [tomziebart] [In reply to] Can't Post

Finally, some change. I love this race, and I remember when we sat around a picnic table and announced winners (yes, it used to be that small and quaint). But over the years it's changed, and I'm not sure KLM ever realized that it's the experience we were after, not the logistics. I mean, after this year's race I contacted KLM four times about getting results submitted and posted with USAT. The first three times it was, "well, the timer company tells me they submitted them, but, duh, I don't know, well, maybe they did or didn't, I don't know" and the fourth time it was, "Yes, sir, I'll take care of it personally, TODAY, and make sure them results get sent into USAT! Yes, sir, right away." And you know what happened? You guessed it: NOTHING. No results, no follow up, no nothing. Sadly, they just don't realize we athletes will race for a ribbon and a little recognition. I'll be at the race in 2010, like always, bringing more new athletes to the race. But it will be at Ryan's race....

Simon just can't stay retired. Those big races with the huge prize purses just lure him right back in....
