Tips for Preparing For Long Ride Can't Post

As a relative newbie to the cycling world, having only logged about 300 miles on my Zipp this past summer, I'm curious how you are supposed to prepare for a long ride (100km, Foxy's Fall Century 2008, Davis CA). Although it isn't a race, I would still like to treat it as one and try to finish with the front pack.

Specifically,
- How should I eat/drink the few days before the race?
- What types of snacks should I bring along on the ride? I'm thinking of a protein bar and a piece of fruit.
- What would a good breakfast be for the day of the race?

Thanks guys.

I don't think you should eat very different in the days before. The evening before maybe a little less fibers and meat, more carbs.

The day of the 100 km , i think it is about a little 3 hours of riding so no need for a protein bar . Drink enough and eat gels or normal energy-bars so you get about 1g of carbs per hour per kg of bodyweight in total. More is a recipe for disaster.

If it's your first time riding this long: start eating and drinking soon enough!! Many people start a lot to late and pay the price in the end.

I wouldn't eat or do anything differently before the ride that what you've been training with. Some people like to hydrate extra leading up to it but I'm not convinced (last year it was pretty hot). I think that's a pretty general consensus for any race, ride, or workout.

Normal breakfast always... for me Starbucks latte and a butter croissant. :) The first aid station has nice bagels and pastries and trail mix to really stock up on. Get in early before the line, stock up, hit the road.

As for food during? No need to bring anything with you unless you are extremely picky or require very specific nutrition. Foxy's is one of if not the best century rides around here. The only thing I would remotely consider bringing is your own electrolyte powder if you have had problems in the past.

I think the 100km misses the big climb after lunch... so it should be a wonderful day out there. Sad I have to miss it this year.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully the weather isn't too cold at the start of the race. I'm considering purchasing some knee warmers just in case but with the weather in Davis still not aware that summer has ended I'd expect it to be a nice day. Are there any other local rides you could suggest? I don't believe my bike is legal in most real races, and I doubt I'd rank well currently, but I would like to participate in more group orientated rides.

You want to eat a really good breakfast the day of. I like oatmeal, it has stay with you power in it.

But really you just want to do what you are used to and make sure you have the nutrition for the time in the saddle.

Not to rain on your goals, but you might want to set a more personal goal that "with the fron pack". You indicate that you have ridden 300 miles this summer. This ride will be almost 20% of your seasonal meilage for the year. In the metric centuries that I have ridden this year the front pack holds a pace about 35k/h and finishes in under 3 hours. If you can pull that off then that is great. But I think you might be better served by setting goals that you can control so you are not disappointed on your last ride of the season.

Have fun. I was in Davis once at UC. It is a really nice place.

Are you looking for group rides around Davis? There are lots to choose from.

You could try the 10-mile TT tomorrow at 5:30 at Putah Creek road. It's described here. It's at 5:30 this week so we don't run out of light. Last one of the year!

If you want group rides, there are the DBC race rides Tuesday and Thursday evenings, I think 5pm. They meet in front of Sutter Hospital. Those might be done for the year too, not sure.

There's also the Wheelworks ride over Cantelow every Saturday morning at 8am.

You can look at the ride calendar the Davis Bike Club puts out, or check out the UCD tri team's workout calendar, or the Mad Cows' racing calendar (which is rather sparse.)

That's a good point. An overall goal for me is to average 20 mph during the ride which would be a nice step for me. Aside from riding the Zipp since earlier this summer, I've been using a Schwinn mountain bike so I'm still not conditioned for higher cadence. I have been doing at least rides once a week now, but I haven't riden the bike with cycling shoes yet (waiting on a set of Look Keos) so I have room for improvement.

I've heard about the TT event, not sure if I can make it out at that time though. Also, I've heard that the Wheelworks ride is mostly pros, so I'm not sure how well I'd fair. If I can make some room in the middle of the week I'll try to join the DBC rides, but it seems like I'm restricted to Saturday/Friday for rides. Thanks for the info though! If you see a Zipp at the TT, it'll probably be me as I've yet to see any Zipps or even softails around Davis.

The Wheelworks ride is definitely not mostly pros, but it can be speedy.

If you ride around here long enough you'll see some other beam bikes. There's one guy who lives out in Winters that has ridden softrides for years, if you ride out that way you'll see him from time to time.

If I see you at the TT I'll say hi.
