Thoughts on Patriot 1/2IM in Freetown, MA?
Can't Post
I'm thinking of heading out in four weeks to do this second year race. Did anyone here race last year? The bike course is slightly changed this year (only 58 miles this time compared to 60+ last year), but can anyone tell me anything about the course profile, road surface, etc, etc?
Thanks,
-Colin

from what I hear it is really well run, and the roads are nice/clear.
How did Mooseman go for you?

Thanks for the info Kurt.
Mooseman wasn't great. Heat or no heat, it's unacceptable to me to finish in 5:07 and have Alex beat me by an hour. That's no good. Fortunately running a 1:44 doesn't take much out of me, so my recovery should be short. :( Congrats to Alex for breaking his own course record. Given the temperature differential between last year and this year, that's pretty impressive.

I did Patriot last year and it was a fun and well-run race. The bike & run course were both long, and I seem to recall the swim course was an off-distance also. The bike course was scenic and was relatively flat with some rolling hills. I think the roads were in good shape (for New England). Car traffic was a small issue; there were 1 or 2 times when I had to slow-down to avoid cars that were turning in front of me. But this wasn't anything that impaired the race experience for me. The run was mostly thru residential neighborhoods. There wasn't much fan support once you got away from the transition area, but the aid stations were frequent and well-stocked. I'll be doing it again this year.

I did this race last year as well and I think the previous poster summed it up. The bike and run were both long and it looks like the bike will be long again this year (roads were dug up last year so they had to change last minute). I found the roads to be smooth and a very nice/fast course. The run was great as well but yes, very quite. I doubt I am doing it this year since I have not swam since August but otherwise would have no hesitation signing up again.

We're staying at the Fairfield Inn in Middleboro, MA, which is ~10miles from the race site. It is right next to a Holiday Inn Express. I think these are the 2 closest hotels to the race. I live in Boston which is only 1 hour from the race, but getting an extra 50 minutes of sleep that morning is worth it to me! I'll see you at the event!

:D
I'll be the swimmer-looking chick in the ROCK STAR suit. You'll be the guy in goggles and a black wetsuit ;-)
see you soon!

great race, very festive atmosphere afterwards too. It's the same guys that put on the cranberry oly and the new england multisport expo. It was extremely hot last year and there is very little shade on the run,I remember baking out there.

Dearest togher,
I'm glad to hear it's a good race. BUT, you must not talk about this "extremely hot" and "no shade" thing because CCF and I got hit with that LAST weekend, at Mooseman, and at this race I think we are both hoping for nicer weather than ninety-eight-freakin-degrees-hot or whatever KJ said the temp on the run was. It was close to that.
That said, nice warm water so no one wears wetsuits and I can show off that swimsuit for 25 more minutes would be perfectly welcome.
Love,
tc

half iron! I'm a fish by trade. I only do tri so I look good in my swimsuit ;-) anyway, I swim fast, then I spend a good 3+ hours hearing "ON YOUR LEFT" by people who catch fish (or, cyclists). But we are working on that!!!

I am doing this race as my first 1/2 iron. I have done cranberry a couple of times and know lots of people that did this race last year. Cranberry is an extremely well one race and have heard great feedback on Patriot even though that last year was the first year. I opted for this race over the one in RI the following week as I think the race directors put on the best triathlons that I have done so far in New England. Also, having lived in NE now for 20 years, I have found that a one week difference in July makes a big difference. July 4 weekend may be really hot but the following week is guaranteed to be hot. Actually, I may be jinxing myself on the weather....maybe I should have not said that....making predictions on New England weather.

Yeah, warm wetsuit-free water would be pretty good, but I'd rather swim in nice soothing 60 degree water, and then have around 70 degrees on the bike and the run. How does that sound?

I will actually be doing this race on a team. I am doing the swim to try to get a few other people involved as they are unsure about triathlons. I have heard nothing but good things about the race.
Most likely I am riding the bike course wednesday night and will report back.

I've ridden the bike course a few times over the past couple of months. It's relatively easy, in my opinion - not very hilly at all. One bad thing about it is that there are several sections that could use some serious repaving. Really bumpy. In the very least there are a couple of places that could use a street sweeping. Lots of debris. I hope they do that. Still it seems a relatively fast bike course.
Also there are at least 2 sections where you ride between 2 ponds or lakes. It was calm this past weekend but a month ago when I rode it, the crosswind was so strong in these sections I nearly got blown off my road bike. I can't imagine how bad it would have been had I been riding some deep-profile aero wheel or disc. I'd have been in the pond, I think.

I'm looking forward to it, though I am not thrilled about the Heed on the course, tried it a few times and have bad issues with it, and usually I have an iron stomach...looks like I will have to carry my own drink, which I hate to do.

Hey all. I direct the Patriot along with my friend Eric. Thanks for the kind words on our events. As noted by others, the bike and run were a little long last year. The run will be 13.1 miles this year and the bike will again be a little long at 58 miles, but its pretty flat.
You can find more details on the event at
www.PatriotTriathlon.com
You can view a short video on last year's event set to music at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfF-y0If6J8
(Note: The name of the event has changed from "Patriot Half Iron" to "Patriot Triathlon").
The nearest hotels (Fairfield Inn and Holiday Inn Express in Middleboro, MA) were near capacity last I checked, but there are no frills, dorm-style accommodations available right at Cathedral Camp which is the site of the event. Here's a link to reserve one of these rooms:

I did Patriot last year as a relay (I did the bike leg -- all 60 miles of it). There is no comparison between the "hot" weather last year at Patriot and this year's "extremely hot" weather at Mooseman. Mooseman was unbearably hot. I did a recovery ride the Monday after Mooseman and still can't believe I swam, biked, ran, and PR'd in that weather.
The bike was relatively flat with a few small rolling hills. Compared to Mooseman and Timberman its flat. It was a little breezy in spots last year, especially going across the dike between the ponds.
They had run out of water at the last bike aid station when I got there. It would be a good idea to be prepared for this if you're going to be on the bike course for a long time. The roads were bumpy in spots but weren't as bad as Mooseman was this year.
I'm also hoping for much cooler weather for Patriot (than Mooseman). 50s or 60s with a light mist for the run would be great for me...
