This Compression Thing Has Gone Too Far

Today I did a local 5k, and when I warming up this guy was putting on a pair of compression sock. The great thing about it was that he was saying how much faster it made him, he claims they cut over a minute off his 5k time. Ha if thats the case I better pick up a pair myself!

Agreed. We sell compression socks. We believe they work just for recovery. We have yet to see any medical proof of anything otherwise....anyone who make a claim like this probably has the middle name "Placebo."

I do agree that they are great for recovery but I also believe they help with my knee discomfort during long runs. If I go without the compression tights my knee usually blows up at mile 7-8. If I go with I get no pain. I don't think they make me faster but they do make my runs more comfortable.
I use Zoots compression knickers to run and their recovery tights for...well, duh, recovery.

Would you sell your compression socks to a customer who told you he was using them strictly for racing? IE, customers calls your customer service, and says he wants compresion for racing. Do you turn him away, and talk about how the ones you sell are used on the bases of recovery, or would you still sell that customer the compression socks you sell?
I have no problem with someone using a product even it is placebo. Even if it simply is a product of your mind, it's a positive mojo for that person. I dont have any issue with it. However, alot of people seem to have issues with compression.

It's nice to see a company that sells the socks admit this. Others make claims that have not been proven. In Hawaii, you were definately a minority without them. I do wear them the day after my long run (under my work dress slacks) and I do feel recovered more quicky. However, I'll never race in them until I see a proper study done... and even then I may not:)

There are two powerful forces in triathlon, the need to try/incorporate new gadgets and technology, and, the desire to look good. I fear that that compression technology, through the former, is destroying the latter.
For example, it's not how fast you are, but how good you look doing it that matters. If I'm in a sleeveless running jersey and baggy shorts on my bike going 16mph, you think I'm slow. But if I'm kitted out in matching Giordana or Assos, one assumes I'm on a 5-hour ride preparing for an upcoming Classic.

I find triathletes as a general rule to be people who will go to great lengths to fit in. With rare exceptions, triathletes want to look like everyone else and do what everyone else does and if everyone is wearing compression socks, it's something you don't question, at least until everyone else stops wearing them.
Triathletes are a marketer's dream. If you can find a brand that a few of the pros use, you have it made.

I wore my compression sleeves today on a 10 mile run. While I don't think they make me any faster, I do like how they hold my calves from bouncing around.

Aero helmets and man-bras have already done that.

I agree with you there. They may make your run more comfortable due to your knee issue, and I agree with you that they don't make you faster.

Q. Would you sell your compression socks to a customer who told you he was using them strictly for racing?
Emilio Answer: Yes, I would.
Q. IE, customers calls your customer service, and says he wants compresion for racing. Do you turn him away, and talk about how the ones you sell are used on the bases of recovery, or would you still sell that customer the compression socks you sell?
Emilio Answer: We have told many customers this: Compression socks have not been medically proven to help in races, and we do not make false claims about our socks, but if you personally believe they work for you, then our sock would work for you as well.
I agree with you, I have no problems with placebo. The mind is a powerful thing.

You bet. Especially if we're racing in the pool. You'll also need to wear my patent pending
compression parachute and your bike helmet.

I think they are great for recovery, my calves are always much less sore more quickly when I wear them afterwards.
I don't know if they make me any faster while racing, but, I've had much less issues w/ my balky calves after racing while wearing them. So, maybe wearing them while racing is sorta a pre-recovery recovery tool? 'Tool' is the operative word while wearing them, that's for sure ;-)
As for Mister 5k - never underestimate the power of the placebo.

Yeah, I did a local 5K race a few weeks ago and saw a women pretty far back in the pack wearing compression socks. They just looked dorky as all hell. Even if someone proves they do make you run faster, I think it is safe to say that I will NEVER wear them -- if that somehow gives other runners/triathletes an advantage over me, so be it. Just my two cents. For what is is worth, I do not wear an aero helmet either -- maybe that is why I rarely make the podium (that and my pathetic training regimen)...

One brand pretends 6% improvements in performance during the race, not during the recovery.
And I think they are the only one presenting figures.

the support you get from the socks is overly underestimated by the skeptics.
im almost positive there is no clinical difference between the venous return of a running leg with or without compression.

I had a surgeon friend come with me to Ironman Wisconsin. She was actually CONCERNED about the compression "sleeves" (not the socks) as she mentioned they are the opposite of socks (i.e. keep blood in your lower legs).
For the record, she wear compression socks in the OR and was quite intrigued with their use at Ironman.

You and I know performance of that sort (i.e.: taking 1min off your 5k open time) is largely driven by psychology. If this dude believes he is faster wearing them, then he will be.
I still think they look dorky when racing... ;-)

Field test research shows compression socks can decrease recovery time post race. Very important if it is a "B" or "C" priority race that you are training through. No advantage for the race itself but if you have a hard block of training coming up, it's worth it to wear them during a race.

No, that is why Emilio is making the new Water Rover wetsuit. :) You need to get yourself one. And then do races.

Yeah - they look really sillly - but I have to say that as an aging athlete - I wear them when I do speed work - or for instance when I havent had spikes on for a while - and I find I have less calf tenderness and tightness. So no I dont go faster in them - but I recover faster - so I am believer. No hobbling the day after a race is worth the riducule.
