Thinking of cutting brake up turns vision base bar. Anyone done it and comment on safety?
Can't Post
I am thinking of cutting off the brake up turns on a carbon vision base bar. Anyone done it and could comment how comfortable and safe feeling the bike is without the up turns. Also I assume you can cut the carbon just like the allow bar.
Thanks!

1. the carbon bar you can't cut as easily, it has a more complex cable routing and you would be cutting through some internal cable routing stuff
2. its definitely less stable. i had that setup for a while and had no tape on it...bad idea coming out of the water with no upturns and no bar tape!
3. someone here posted some wind tunnel results of the bars with vision levers and said the upturns didn't make much difference if you used the vision levers.

I use vision levers. And I did a read a post that it did not make much of a difference. But then I read another post from John Cobb where it was measured at about 40 grams difference with vision levers. Which would be worth it to me.

iirc correctly the john cobb post didn't have info with the vision levers in both position.
it had some other lever in two positions, and the vision in just one
*shrug*
either way, if you do this, get the aluminum vision bar, and put something on there for grip

You are right. Did not read closely enough. But here is what was said
"I believe that the upturned bars are not as efficient but riders generally like to have the feel so when stopping your hands don't slip off. I suppose you would want some numbers so I looked up some, doing a test with base bars mounted on a 56 kinda' aero [2004] frame with parts on it. B/R is Blackwell Research carbon levers
Drag with upturned ends, B/R levers - 1249gr. @ 0 yaw
Upturned ends , Vision levers - 1192gr @ 0 yaw
Flat ends w/ B/R levers flat - 1155 gr. @ 0 yaw
I believe you can cut most of the current bars if desired.
"
I would guess from this that flat ends with Vision would also be an improvement. You never know until you test it. But if one resulted in 100 gram improvement then if the Vision got you 50 grams it would seem to be worth it. In one race I missed first in AG by 9 seconds :(
