The funny stuff you see out running... Can't Post

Out running this morning in Charleston WV along the river. Sun only up for a few minutes. Beautiful morning. Bout a couple blocks from the state capitol and gov's mansion see a chevy cavalier hit a few flower barriers in a couple blocks then lose a fight with a telephone pole. Hood crumpled, airbag goes off. Im about a hundred feet away. A guy running the other way stops also.

Guy gets out of the smoking car. Bleeding a bit, 50ish, fat and clearly hammered. He starts across the road at us, shorts, shirt, one shoe. The other guy starts yelling to stop and that he is a cop. Fat drunk guy says fuck you and starts down the very steep cement stairs which lead to the lower path along the river. Of course he falls and tumbles end over end down onto the lower cement path. 2 more guys running on the lower path [who also happen to be cops] are within a few feet and start yelling at the now more heavily bleeding guy to stop. He keeps heading for the river which is about 30 feet below the lower path down a steep bank with long grass and rocks. Bang bang splash, now the genius is in the river and starts swimming to the other side.

No clue how clean the river is, seen lots of coal barges, no swimmers. A few hundred yards across, clear this idiot is not going to make it. Now I'm thinking great, I am gonna have to go in after this idiot. We are all yelling at him to stop, the cops saying they are going to let him drown. The joke was that while they may be cops, they are not firemen and that is their job. Luckily the guy thinks better of it after getting about 20 yards out.

Eventually makes it back and crawls his way bleeding up to the lower path. Guy is now wet, cold and bleeding all over the place. The one thing all agree about is that it is really too bad no one had a cell phone so that we could have shot video of this guy, would have been an instant classic. As he did not drown I will admit it is one of the funniest things I have seen in a while.

Hard to believe that I would miss all of this action in my own fair city (which is a pretty sleepy place, I assure you). The funniest part of this story to me is the reaction of all the police officers--let the guy drown, that's the fire department's job!

Glad it turned out well and our fair hero made it back to shore. BTW, although I wouldn't go out and drink gallons of water from it, the river is fine to swim in. There is a 1.5 mile swim from bridge to bridge every Labor Day weekend.

you realize, of course, that some people in the midst of a medical emergency often come off as drunk. And last time I checked, a cops' job is "protect and serve" not joke while a person is heading into a river at 6am in the morning.

/benefit of the doubt...

Sadly enough, locally here (metro Detroit) some cops just recently beat a guy who they thought was drunk driving. He ended up dying. Wasn't drunk - was a diabetic who was having a severe hypoglycemic episode.

My wife, who is also a type-1 diabetic, has had several severe hypoglycemic episodes over the years.

The most recent was when she was pregnant with our first. She was out driving < 2 miles from our house. She was apparently driving erratically which the woman behind her noticed. At a red light, she failed to start again. Thank God the woman stopped, got out of her car and checked on her.

It turns out the woman was a nurse and recognized that she had an insulin pump on and was a diabetic. She flagged down a cop, etc. etc.

Anyways, long-winded way of agreeing with you. Could have been someone having a severe medical issue.

The more I think about it, the more I am getting pissed. Glad the cops thought someone in distress was funny without having any idea if he was drunk or not.

I am in Charleston a lot for work and this is the first time I ever saw anything "interesting" happen. It is a great run along the river and it is exactly 10k from the marriot to the end of the path and back. Only flat ground in the state that I have seen.

One of the early things they teach you in EMT class. If someone
seems drunk, get a blood sugar.

Strangest thing I've seen. I live in a suburb of Phoenix. Only
pseudo rural. I'm running along one of the major roads when I
look over to my left, and right next to the fence is an emu. Alive
and well, walking around. Haven't seen it before or since.

i'm assuming this is the ohio river, there are barges that come down all the time, aside from the typically high bacteria rate (especially where you are located because of the industry in your area), the river is a dangerous place to be. that drunk is lucky he didn't mame/kill someone, or swim out further and get sucked into the chanel that lies beneath the water. i hope they throw his ass in jail for awhile.

Good timing on the thread. On my last stretch of a 10 miler this morning- a dead gator about 6ft long on the side of the road probably hungry and looking for some runners to chomp on..

Seems unlikely that a person having a medical emergency would attempt to escape by swimming across a river. Seemed like avoiding jail was the plan.

Not true. That's the Kanawha River and the current isn't that strong. Though trying to row on it during a windy day isn't fun (I used to row before I decided that upper body mass really wasn't all that important and switched to triathlon).

I'm not sure which medical issue would make you scream at someone who said they were a cop and jump in a river.

That's not how good Sam laws work. They protect someone attempting to provide aid, not require require you to assist. Also, if you think injecting yourself into a situation could in any possible way put you in danger, then don't. Trying to rescue a confused, possibly drunk large individual if you have no training in water rescue is pretty damn dangerous.

Agreed. It can be very dangerous to rescue a person in danger in the water. I've rescued some flailing fatties in my day and was very inclined to knock them unconcious to save my own ass. It never came to that fortunately.

  <sigh>

Misinformed is worse than not informed. While I cannot speak to the requirements of the police officers, the average citizen does not have a duty to act. If they have training and identify themselves as such (i.e. "I'm an EMT, can I help?"), then yes, they have a duty to act.

The language that I'm familiar with is as long as you act "as a reasonable and prudent person would" in similar circumstances, you are protected from litigation.

Yes, that is true, there are quite a few medical events where the person will appear drunk. However, after a total of 9 years running ambulances and working in an ER, I know of no medical emergencies (non overdose related) where the person that appears drunk will also yell obscenities and attempt to avoid arrest, and have the coordination to do so. In a true diabetic crisis, I'd be surprised if the person could even walk. Generally they appear drunk because the brain is starting to shut down extraneous systems in the body to protect itself.

But way to take an amusing story to an illogical extreme. Well done you.

These police officers probably thought the same thing (not arguing with you. . .just saying):

Thanks for your correction.
I did not know that it differs from most laws in (Western) Europe.

I was going to say the best I've seen lately is a woman in her 'workout outfit' matching nike stretch pants and top walking, talking on a cell phone and smoking.

I think this is only true on Senfield and you're up against Judge Van de Lay. The cops on the other hand should be obliged to help out.

Most definitely agree with you on that however, had this person actually drowned with the cops making jokes about that on shore and not doing anything about the situation probably wouldn't read too well in the papers.
