Re: The Official Cervelo P4 Thread [jonnyo] [In reply to] Can't Post

Actually had breakfast with one of the owners of the "new bike shop" this morning - it is Tri3sports...www.tri3sports.ca - out of Port Moody as you noted. i have no affiliation with them other than they are my LBS - and i have trained with Peter Fargey for several IM's - Pete has is a pretty experience long course athlete and is also chairperson of the local tri club. Yes they will be doing the on course tech support as well (interesting story about the on course tech support crew in 06...i was spectating at the end of the out and back - after a bit got hungry so wondered round to the subway in Keremeos (probably around 2 odd km off the course) to see 2 tech support vans pulled in there for lunch as well) ...I understand Bike Barn is your sponsor and usually stop by there several times a year when i'm in town - i have also used their service for IMC in the past. They of all people should know the NAS game ...which is if you want to play you have to pay..no matter where you fit in the food chain. So i'd suggest this was a conscious decision by Bike Barn "not to play" as such...i'd suggest that any remote store will have an interesting time offering the level of support a local store can - specially one as good as Bike Barn - however given the opportunity if i ran a remote store it would probably make good business sense to tender. I guess Bike Barn figure they can make as much profit by utilizing their reputation as a draw card - only time will tell. I see this more as a NAS issue in not making it viable (in the eyes of Bike Barn) for a local store to tender for the business...

Re: The Official Cervelo P4 Thread [Bman] [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the compliments...they are apperciated.

As for IMC....We wont be the 'official' store this year. NA Sports decided to make some changes this year, but did offer us the opportunity to be in the Expo. However we felt that the commitment they were looking for would spread our resources too thin. We decided to make it our first priority to ensure that customers who come to The Bike Barn during Ironman get the best service possible. On a personal note I am frustrated that after supporting an event for 25 years my business is faced with outside competition. But, NA Sports feels that a successful race needs an 'offical' bike shop in the Expo. I hadn't heard who the shop would be until this thread. I guess it shows that ST is the best place to get triathlon news.

As for Race Day support....In the contract that NA Sports provided us, the 'official' store is responsible for taking care of race day support. I am sure that is the case with Tri3Sports. Further to that, I was helping an athlete finish changing his flat during the Desert Half yesterday and he told me he was doing tech support for IMC this year because his local shop is the 'official' store.

As for Ironman Week....We are still looking forward to seeing some familiar faces, and hopefully some new ones this year.

As for JonnyO....he is a great roommate and keeps Melissa and I laughing. Plus the dog is starting to warm up to him, but I don't think Diablo likes his French haccent.

Gotta reply to this comment from Zulu even though his comments were fair, but I get defensive......

(interesting story about the on course tech support crew in 06...i was spectating at the end of the out and back - after a bit got hungry so wondered round to the subway in Keremeos (probably around 2 odd km off the course) to see 2 tech support vans pulled in there for lunch as well)

We had eight tech vehicles out on the course in the last couple years....each with a full time professional mechanic. We started before 5:00am and didn't get all the cars unloaded until well after 5:00pm. That two stopped for a meal at the same time probably wasn't the best timing, but it is hard to schedule lunch breaks...good thing we had 6 other vehicles out there.

Well if we never see it then that is alright. As long as we get an update every single day from you Jay on the main page, that works for me. I hope that tomorrow you are able to get a lot of pictures of the cool TT rigs and the other gear that goes with the TT such as helmets.

So tomorrow with the stage being so close to ST'ers hearts, we should see a ton of pictures from you correct? Hey if you need help next year please let me know and I will fly over on my own coin and help out. That way if we split expenses, it should keep the cost down for Dan. ;-)

I wish I was still in France, but I had to TGV it back to Leysin to help my wife get ready for her race at Ironman Switzerland. I bet we will see some stuff the teams didn't want us to see. Check the Rabobank guys... when I was at their truck on the weekend, the Shimano guys were there sizing up a new FD on on of the TT bikes. When I glanced the new bar end shifting system, one of the guys ran over and covered it up with bubble wrap... wouldn't let me check it out, let alone shoot it.

On the new Ridley, I have some shots of the BB area... will go through them and pull one and post it here, hopefully in the next few days. I spent some time talking to Joachim Aerts, their head guy, and Morgan Nicol from Oval Concepts. A lot of work went into this bike, it's pretty impressive. I'll be following up with a story on the deets of this new bike on the website soon...

-Jay

I love that I can watch the whole thing live with no interruptions over here....

Surely you forgot to write that in pink... either that or I'm totally missing how he and the rest of the boys are destroying SLC-SLs already. What...are they replacing them after every stage?

in my view, this new giant bike has big potential. but i've got a few concerns about the design:

-is the seat "post" actually a seat mast? i think seat masts are a very poor solution for people in the real world that sometimes travel with their bikes. they also limit adjustability and resale.

-the front looks very aero, but how is the stem length and height adjusted? i can't really see how that's done. the bike's front end reminds me a little of the new (and not very aero) argon bike with the integrated fork: it has no stem adjustment at all.

-the front brake you'd be forced to use on this bike is a poor design, and i doubt it's very aerodynamic.

Forgive my ignorance, but where are you getting the "Argon is not aero" bit from?
Is the E-114 a fixed front end, or does it feature an adjustable/changeable stem like the Felt DA? I ask because I like the look of it, but am getting no response to my queries from a big UK retailer.

With regards to the Giant, the bars look similar to the UK Sport track bars, with a fixed base and arm rest risers that raise the extensions too.
The Giant could be a custom front end assembly like the BMC Time Machine.
The fork could be redone to shield the brake a bit more, fairing it in. Is it Jamis or Javelin that do that? Sure I've seen a picture but can't remember what it was attached to :-)
As for the brake itself being a poor design, who cares as long as it's effective enough for TT/Tri use. I know my Tri bike doesn't brake as well as my road bike, but I don't generally ride the Tri rig down mountains.

The stem on the E-114 is adjusted in height by using additional supplied spacers. As for fore and aft adjustment it is done by moving the pads on the base bar. As too the comment of it not being aero, unless you hold a PHD in that particular field it might be best to keep your opinion to yourself..........

Really? Does that mean that John Cobb is no longer to be listened to?? Are you saying that people can't have expertise in a field without a PhD in that particular field?

How about if Argon just ponies up some aero data to show just how aero it is (or not)? ;-)

Ya what about Cancellara. I am at work watching the live coverage on Velonews. I rode to work this morning so I had to leave right when the TV coverage started so I have not seen anything yet but I am recording the early 4 hour coverage.

So what is everyone riding?

interesting, i wasn't aware a PhD was required to post about aerodynamics here. so a masters degree and heavy iron time ain't good enough for you, eh?

anyway, as others have posted, we still await some numbers from argon ...

Re: The Official Cervelo P4 Thread [gregX] [In reply to] Can't Post

The silver part of the stem/front fairing has spacers that can be added and removed. There is no need to adjust the base bar fore and aft there is enough adjustment with the elbow pads.

AS to the PHD comment it's more that it is incredibly tiring listing to the sheep bahahaha without any real knowledge. As for numbers from Argon I have yet to see any numbers from anybody plus with no real standardized testing methodology it becomes somewhat nul and void anyways. So as I have said before there are lots of great bikes and great designs. Some people are going to be faster on design method A and some on B, finding what works for you is what is important. Look at the FIST method a large part of that fit mthod admits that some bikes don't work for everyone, finding what works best for you will make you faster then a bike that is 2% more aero and 100g lighter..........sometimes we really need to take off the blinders and look at the big picture. I love the "what bike should I buy threads" where Cervelo is the first bike mentioned and mentioned over and over without any questions regarding current bike, how it fits, age, height, weight, flexibility, etc.......

Ahem....http://www.slowtwitch.com/images/trekwhitepaper1.pdf

...And that's just one example. There's also data "out there" leaked from the Cervelo testing, not to mention older wind tunnel numbers that have also been shared here.

"Standardized methodology" is a moot point. Just do the test on a "head to head" basis and present the data. Let people decide based on facts even if they don't answer ALL the questions they may have. That's much better than just saying "It's SUPER aero...trust us!" ;-)

so how do you adjust the base bar itself fore and aft?

I would assume you would just get a different length stem.

Re: The Official Cervelo P4 Thread [gregX] [In reply to] Can't Post

In an attempt to un-hijack this thread, I will make the bold statement that I did not see anything new from Cervelo on the bikes I saw on TV this morning, other than Cancellara's custom paint job (which, admittedly, was sweet). No P4C. No P3C-SL.

Boo hoo. (And, if I'm wrong, I would like to point out that: (a) I don't own a P3C, so my opinion shouldn't be taken as gospel; and (b) I only watched about 20 minutes of coverage and saw a couple of quick shots of O'Grady, Voigt, and Cancellara.)

And let's not get into another Coggan v. Day argument over who is qualified to comment on what. There are better things to do.

Re: The Official Cervelo P4 Thread [gregX] [In reply to] Can't Post

Basically the Argon E-112 is the better option since its standard steering mechanism will allow me (probably) to adopt my current riding position easier than than 114 and for less cost, yes?

Besides, Argon bikes are very rare in Scotland, and having something no-one else does is half the battle :-)
I could always go back to the fixie I suppose.

Nothing new from Cervelo (that I could see), but the new bikes from Giant and Ridley both look sweet. I'd like to know whether that Giant has an adjustable seatpost or a cut-to-fit mast. Incidentally, Competitive Cyclist's email blast this morning included the new Ridleys, I believe the TT bike is ~$3200 for the frameset.

BrainBike - 1st Day
Got to meet Cid form Inside/Out, Tom Demerly, Darrel Eng, guys from Cadence.

First off, Phil White gave a "Year in review". Cervelo is doing well (BTW). When your biggest
problem is you can't make bikes as fast as your dealers sell them, it's a problem;
but kinda in a good way.

We then got shown the lineup for 2009.

Tomorrow, we will mostly be test riding (I'll see if I can drop Tom D or not (you know, "friendly ride"))

So I haven't been following this new cervelo p4 that is supposed to come out, but from the looks of it is is there not a new model for '09? I am confused because I keep seeing these p4 threads and now it seems as though the only difference is color?
