It will be UCI legal because Cervelo got up and running (and where it is today) from its Protour sponsorship of CSC not because a bunch of triathletes decided it was cool to have a bike that looks fast.

you sure about that? i think you better check with the big C., because the vast majority of cervelo bikes since the beginning are purchased by riders for use in, yup you guessed it, triathlon.

Do you have figures for this assertion? I would say that having the world time trial champion, american time trial champion, and countless stage wins were the biggest key to their success. Triathlon is still a relatively small niche sport, whereas globally cycling is huge.

ALRIGHT....

ENOUGH. HAS NO ONE ELSE THOUGHT THAT MAYBE IT WON'T BE A P4?
DOES RELEASING A P4 REALLY MAKE THAT MUCH SENSE... CLASSICALLY CERVELO HAS RELEASE SL (SUPERLIGHT) VERSIONS OF IT'S BIKES. I WOULD BET THAT A P3 SUPERLIGHT MAKES MORE SINSE THAN A WHOLE NEW BIKE.

IF THEY ALREADY MAKE THE FASTEST BIKE WHY NOT MAKE A LIGHTER VERSION? PERHAPS SPEC IT WITH SOME NICER PARTS?
IT'S NOT A STRETCH TO THINK YOU'LL SEE A SRAM BIKE WITH 3T PART. ESPECALLY SINCE THE CERVELO " e' " IS ON THE RUBBER PARTS OF THE VENTUS AEROBAR.

Re: The Official Cervelo P4 Thread [BlakeSKI] [In reply to] Can't Post

A P3C-SL might be the bike they show at the Tour and that would be cool as well. I just think it would be very cool to see a new design from Cervelo that is designed after all of their windtunnel time. I am sure that after they had the P3C in production being the guys they are, they said to themselves "I think we could do this and this to make it faster the next time". I personally think that the rear end of the P3C is new as good as you will ever get in regards to double diamond frames. If they take the rear and come up with an outstanding front end, who knows how much better they could make the new bike.

Either way, the next week should be a lot of fun with the Tour starting and new products showing up.

Just go to any local Crit, RR, or Club ride/Group ride and look at the numbers. Then go to a local tri and compare. Triathlon crushes the Road numbers from what I have seen.

seriously, anybody (gerard especially) know if the p4 will be uci-legal?

i hope it won't be uci-legal. and not because i think the bike will be a lot more aero if it's not uci-legal. it's more that the uci are such a bunch of friggin' bozos, they need to have the best bike company in world put them and their ridiculous rules in their place.

That seems like an uneducated hope. UCI doesn't prevent things from being more aero - it just gives a more fair advantage to countries with less resources to spend on custom bikes. Go do some reading about the USA's 1million dollar Atlanta track project or other such ventures from other countries.

It will be UCI legal because Cervelo got up and running (and where it is today) from its Protour sponsorship of CSC not because a bunch of triathletes decided it was cool to have a bike that looks fast.

So you think that countries (and even some bike companies) aren't investing HUGE amounts of R&D and resources to produce a bike that might never see production, or that production will be on such a small scale that the hundreds of thousands of dollars of development will never be recouped? It doesn't take a UCI-illegal design to invest in development.

Uhh- how many people ride a TT bike during a RR or a crit?

The point that i am trying to make is that if you go to any of the Crits, or RR then more people are riding other brands, very few Cervelo Road Bikes but if you go to a Tri more than half of the people there are on Cervelo TT bikes

Yes, so until then, I guess that some puissant company making beam bikes will ALWAYS be faster than the latest and greatest Mighty Cervelo TT Machine.

First of all, that word, I do not think it means what you think it means: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/puissant

Also, beam bikes aren't more aero than modern top end TT bikes (P3C, DA, TTX)

I believe the pronunciation is "piss-ant." That damn u key is so close to the i.

What does a RR or crit have to do with the P4? Cervelo's made most of its inroads into the cycling world through TT bikes, but triathlon is a much smaller slice of the bicycling pie.

It is a response to your comment;

My point is that Triathlon is the majority of their business. Having a Team the level of CSC is a success but i would have to say that Triathlon is what made them who they are.

You got me on the typo. I momentarily confused the terms.

But really on the TT bikes?

Maybe this is incorrect. Hard to get real data. Your thoughts?

I have been combing trough patent applications to see if I can find any hint of the P4.. I found a couple of patents under Gerard's name that could be the real deal:

These pics are from a patent named "Aerodynamic Fork Mast Structure" filed in Feb/2008:

And these are the pictures of the fork-mounted brake. But contrary to what has been said here, this is not hydraulic - it has a cable activation:

I actually saw those pictures about 6 months ago while doing some searches. They looked amazing and there was also a hydraulic brake set up for the forks.

It will be interesting to see what comes out in the long run.

Thanks OBI-ONE, Yes I'm the longest sponsored Athlete riding CERVELO's and will ride them until I die!!
I posted that the unveiling was going to be in Louisville, CO but in fact it is going to be in Longmont, Colorado (Ooooopps) Next week!
It would be awesome to see what the boy's at Cervelo could do if they made a non UCI legal bike but not sure they want to spend all that money making something only Triathlete's can use!
Who know's maybe the P5 will be just for the Triathlete's!
If we get to take some Photos next week they will be up Pronto!!
Later Rhodsey

Re: The Official Cervelo P4 Thread [msuguy512] [In reply to] Can't Post

this does look like the bike starting the thread, anyway if there is a new Cervelo tt bike on the way lets hope it is damm expensive, so not every man and his dog has one.

I also wonder if there was a P4 - then they would have 3 pretty nice tt bikes P2c, P3c and P4c (I am assuming it will be carbon).

Would they cut the P2 or the P3 or keep making them all?

If I was cervelo - I would be working on a new soloist. I think the aero road bike is the next big market. Felt has got there's going now. So only felt and cervelo have one. Trek, giant, Specialised, Orbea and everyone else - there road bikes are all looking very similar. They can all make a light stiff bike that rides pretty smooth, now they just have to make a bike that is more aero to spice up the market a bit.

So I'll be looking at the tour for a new soloist, if cancellara has a more aero weapon underneath him, everyone will be scared when they hit 2km to go.
