Strained hamstring questions...
Can't Post
I was dumb and strained my hamsting Tuesday night playing softball. The good thing is I had my last tri of the year on Sunday in Miami. The bad thing is I was going to a half marathon in two months and I am not where I need to be running wise. The hammy is not swollen or discolored and I can walk on it fine, and have now issue bending but I am sure I cant run on it yet. I have been getting ultrasound and icing since it happen and I am noticing improvement. How long should I rest it before giving running a shot, and how slow should I start off once I do run on it?

I've found that when I have a stained hamstring, it's usually from diahrrea.

typo aside...It sounds like this has been a number of days now. I would go for a very slow jog starting out as slow as you know how and as long as the pain doesn't get worse as you go, get in 1 mile.
Then, if the hamstring does not feel worse the next day, you are cleared for slow gentle jogging of any distance.
You will know when you can run faster. It will be when you can run your training pace with no pain or tightness and you can do gentle hamstring stretches without pain.
For now, don't stretch the hamstring.

Last year I had a small tear of the biceps femoralis (part of your hamstring) and it took several months to fully recover, mostly because of mistakes I made. The initial injury was in the first week of April and it was end of September before I was feeling good about my running again. I took it easy for two weeks after the initial injury, iced it, got massage threapy and tried ramping up my training when I was feeling better. Two weeks later (one month after the first injury) I was hobbled again. I took four weeks off, then started professional physical therapy for two months, then eased my way back into running. The good news is that the PT found some imbalances in my leg musculature that probably contributed to the injury and had me work to correct those problems, along with the other stuff he had me do to address strengthening my hamstrings. Flexibility was also emphasized. So when I finally did get back into a good running groove, I was stronger and had better running form than before I was injured. Take your time and go easy when you start again. You don't want to get re-injured.
