Speedplay pedal diffs? Likes or dislikes
Can't Post
So after seeing that used Speedplays go for nearly the same price as new I'm just going to hit Performance Bike up tonight and buy some.
The Light Actions and X-5's are as low as $115, but seem to be really about the same pedal more or less. I'm not a weight weenie at all so to double or triple the price to save weight is pointless to me.
Anyone here have any hoorays or gripes on Speedplays?
Thanks

the X-series are free float..I used those for years and switched to Zeros about a year ago. I much prefer the ability of the Zeros to limit the amount of float. I find that limiting the float to a few degrees gives me a much more stable "locked in" feeling when hammering, especially when out of the saddle.
Just a personal preference. Big fan of Speedplays in general.
I would add that the cleats will foul pretty easily if you step in mud or dirt....one drawback.

The biggest difference I know of is the amount of free-float in the different pedals. Some have only a set range of free-float, others have the ability to change the amount of float, and some, I *think*, have the option of being locked down with no float.
I got the cheapest ones my LBS had (light action I think), and they have 15* of float only. It can't be changed or locked down at all.
EDIT to add: I really like my speedplays. I just wish I had chosen one with the ability to limit the float some. I think it's worth it to spend a little more for that option.

I've used X pedals darn near forever and love them. The free float does take a couple rides to get used to.
At 200#, I am over the TI limit, and too cheap to send on them either. I do spring for the SS model though. A couple pair of pedals I bought used (back to the cheap thing), and with occasional greasing (once a year is "frequent") they are lasting forever. I did blow out a O ring while greasing last month, and got replacements for free (with unrelated purchase at a LBS).
x2 on the potential to clog cleats. I used the coffee caps whenever walking around.

agree with other posters about cleat getting dirt in it easy. But, well worth putting up with for benefits of Speedplay! Give yourself plenty of time to get used to the free float... good timing to do the change early in off-season. I race criteriums and love hard sprinting and have NEVER pulled out of speedplay x-series pedals. But, with Time, Look and others in past I had at least one instance of pulling out of pedal. After using them for so long now I don't even notice that there is total free float.

Okay great stuff guys thanks. I think I like the idea of the Zero's as you can dial in how much float you want.....seems like a nice $10 upgrade over the X and Light Action. Either way I'm sure I will like 'em thanks!
