Sore Right Quadricep
Can't Post
It's been a great triathlon season this year, I've logged about 8 races so far, I have my last one left- the Cedar Beach Sprint Tri in Miller Place on Long Island, in NY. My training has been consistent, and I'm still in shape, so that's good.
However, yesterday I got enticed into a rough and tumble game of touch football. Of course, the field was muddy, and of course we all played too hard. During the game, I felt a tight soreness in my right Quad. I ignored it, finished the game and went home. The quad was sore, but not that bad, so I went to sleep thinking nothing of it. This morning, it's super sore, I have a hard time stretching it, and I'm starting to worry. Last race of the season on Sunday, and I don't want to miss it. I can't really walk well, lest swim, bike and run a 5k.
Any advice on rehabbing it? Should I ice or heat, stretch or not? try to run, not run, bike? I guess I'd be in taper week anyway, although not too much it's just a sprint.
Thanks for the advice, and sorry about my longwindedness (joe Biden used it, so I know it's a word)

Icing will be of dubious value because I assume it's a small, deep muscle in the quad that cold won't penetrate to.
Use naproxin sodium (aleve) at twice the over-the-counter dose for the next few days.
Take this approach to your training: No matter how much it hurts when you start, if the pain continues to decrease as you go, then you are fine to do that activity.
You may find you can swim, but not run. You may find you can run, but not ride....or you will likely be able to do both.
One caveat with running. Even if you can manage a run and the leg gets better as you go, beware of any LIMPING. That will very quickly cause an injury in your good leg.
I suspect you hurt it when you broke in to a sprint at some point. So running will likely be what hurts it most. If you can run (based on the above principle) keep the pace slow.

I did a similarly stupid thing just this last weekend, but at least I was training when I did it!
Seriously sore left calf, and I was concerned that I may have significantly strained it. It hurt really bad just to walk across the room, but today it's not too bad..just a little twinge occasionally. My usual recovery method for stuff like this is easy bike rides. Not enough power to potentially damage anything more, but enough to get blood flowing and help it recover. That and the theraputic hottub usually helps a lot. I typically don't take stuff like Advil or Aleve as they tend to mask the pain and make me think I am doing better than I am. The anti-inflammatory part of the action could be a good thing though, so don't take my advice there.
Anyway, I would recommend "The Stick" for quad pain. It's the greatest thing I have ever used for a quad muscle.
