i find that hard to believe. but if it's true, it's true. at the same time, if you haven't voted because you're a non-user, it would be helpful if you voted as a 'non-user.' this would give us more accurate data. please?

I think it depends on the frequency of use. I always use it when I race, but rarely use it for training on my road bike unless i'm going for more than about 40 miles.

I use it all the time(and I voted), but once I brought it up at a tri-club meeting at Landry's, and I found that no one wanted to talk about it, and in fact there were a few people who were uncomfortable with my bringing it up. That *certainly* shouldn't be the problem with this crowd, but who knows. My surmise is as you say, that this is one of those "not interested so not participating" things.

my guess is a good percentage of tri-geeks don't even know what it's for. It's just that only people who use it are responding to the survey.

I voted "other", because I simply use waterproof skin lotion. My favorite is Vaseline Intensive Care Waterproof.
I rode for a long time without using anything, mostly with no problem. But I did have an occasional saddle sore. I have had exactly zero saddle sores in the last 7 or 8 years, since starting to use lotion.

I agree...I've mostly gone "sans lotion"...but have lately been using it for particular training/racing (i.e. TTs longer than 20K).

I didn't like the question. I
prefer
Assos but I use other stuff due to cost.

Maybe the response is because of the question "which do you prefer". I rarely use anything ... maybe once a year ... but ASSOS is what I use if I need something.

I think it's the wording of the question.
I don't use it regularly since I like to just get on my bike and go, but if I do (long rides on multiple consecutive days) I prefer a cheap home-brew solution so I answered "other".

I guess I don't know what I'm missing, as I've never used anything in over 20 years of competitive triathlons and bike racing. Go figure.

Ken,
Ditto for me. Many, many miles for 25 plus years and only occaisional use - only when I have "problems" down there. Like earlier this year when I went for a week of cycling in Tucson after a winter of hibernations and went from zero cycling to putting in a 20 hour week of riding!! I needed, a bit of help to get through the week. But mostly I ride without.
In a previous thread on this I surmised that the over zealous use of chamois cream by many triathletes is due to the following:
1. Poor saddle choice
2. Poor cycling short choice - or just using poor shorts!
3. Poor bike fit
I can't really speak for one and two as it's hard to really tell that from just looking at people, but if you stand on the side of the road during the bike leg of any triathlon, it's clear that #3 has to be contributing to the problem. Many triathletes still have aweful bike fit. They look uncomfortable on the bike and my guess is that they are uncomfortable.

only use it when we ride long back to back days, the last time I used it was on a bike tour where we rode for 14 days in a row. Asso is the best I have found to date

I use it every time I ride. I have sensitive skin in that region and have found that I easily avoid sores by taking proper care of my skin.

Maybe 3/4ths of those who know what it is use it?
I would think that almost any poll of this type would skew toward users versus non-users. If you don't have an opinion on the subject, why express it?

I pretty much only use it for long rides, or multiple back-to-back-to-back riding days.

The first two years or so of training I never used it and never had any problems.
I found that as I started to spend more time on the trainer (be it winter IM, or time constraints at other times) - I need it to keep the sores at bay.
Just has to do with lots of sweat + friction.
