Chamois buttr is what I use on long rides; it's just because I'm not a diehard cyclist like some on this site and am not aware of alot of other brands. Chamois buttr is the brand that is carried in the few LBS I use other than a generic and I figure for an extra buck or two I'll get the better stuff. I didn't vote due to my lack of knowledge of other brands on the list-so I can't prefer if I have only used 1 of them.

You are mistaken with the second skin. That was the worse pain I have ever been in! Tea Tree Oil really doas work and does not burn. As a matter of fact, I think it may be an ingredient in the Assos cream......Feels gooooood!
33mi today with an ave hr of 86bpm......grease that son of a bitch!
Summit Center this weekend with Snow Bowl on Sat and 85 mi rr with gobs of assos smeared on the assos!

For those that use chamois cream during races, do you apply before the swim (doesn't it rinse away even in a wetsuit)?
Or do you shove a glob down there in T1?

Assos bibs are like tinkerbell feather dusting my taint. They are extacy. They are worth the abhorrent price.
I use assos creme, but it's more cost efficient to use like chamois butter on any shorts after washing them, then a little Assos to the places I know need the love every time I'm going to ride. Creme can turn the worst shorts from sandpaper into bearable.
If I'm hitting the trainer for less than an hour I'll skip the creme because I can do some heavy adjustments at home that I'd be shy doing on the road. I try to be on the road 5-6 days a week, I want everything lubed, whitch hazeled, tea tree'd, and smelling somewhat pleasant.
I have enough stupid thought issues to overcome, like "you should ease up, it's fun" and "wow it would be nice to just relax" or just spacing out, I don't need thoughts wondering if I'm trying to sand my boys off.
I could get away without a water bottle for an hour and a half, but that wouldn't be pleasant at all, and hinder my ability to train daily. Creme taint water, but it's close enough.

LOL! I just had to quote this just in case you were drinking heavily on the 4th and wanted to delete it later. Good stuff!

Dan,
I would be very interested in seeing an article based on some of the conclusions from the recent polls (use of cream, type used, saddle satisfaction). Perhaps a thorough questionnaire is in order. Collecting data on miles/wk, type of riding (easy, hills, group rides, tempo rides), time in aero position, professional bike fitting (and how long ago), quality of bike shorts/bibs and other relevant info would help us determine if our own practices should be re-evaluated.
I use cream almost always but I rarely ride <30 miles. I am less likely to use cream if on a short or casual or hilly ride. Tempo rides on flat terrain (i.e. no time out of the saddle or out of the aero position) lead to much discomfort. My weekly volume also makes a big difference. When I get to 200 miles/week, I feel the need to invent a 'chamois cream automatic injection system' as a single application just doesn't cut it.

chamois cream washes away, but silicone based spay mostly stays. Also I have a small ziplock bag with bike tool, spare tire and CO2.. I also put a small packet of chamois cream in there so that in an emergency I can stop and reapply some. Usually not needed unless it's a very long ride.

It was the question, I suppose: I hardly ever use chamois creme, only in most races when I remember, and then I tend to use bodyglide - as clicked in the survey - because I suspect the Belgian stuff I picked up in Edinburgh won't be good for my wetsuit. It's just a bit of extra insurance, and doesn't really affect me until the run, which is where the serious tugging of roots in the dingle-forest threatens a very local ecological disaster. j
