I don't understand why iPhone owners seem to want apps for so many things that are easily accomplished with any web browser. Isn't the iPhone supposed to have a good web browser? If so, why would you need an "app" for a website such as Slowtwitch?

It would be nice to have a mobile version of ST where the formatting is really stripped down and there aren't any Active x controls. That is cross-device.

I agree that a mobile version of the site (forum) would be nice - although, the forum as-is works extremely well on my Android phone.

Works great on my iPhone as well but it'd be nice not to have to zoom in to read the text.

on my phone, I can zoom in or out, and the browser automatically formats and wraps text so it is all in one column, easily readable. You can make it as big or small as you want. Can't yet do that fancy pinch-zoom thing, though. Not yet. Can still zoom.

I don't know why triathletes don't wear socks when they come out of T1. I mean it only saves them a few seconds. All about getting my ST fix faster. Don't be jealous that your blackberry sucks

Wow, thanks for your "kind" words. I don't have a Blackberry, but you're too stupid to figure that out. The iPhone is cool, but there's nothing it can do that lots of other phones can't also do. I have noticed that many (not all) iPhone owners are total assholes, though.

I've bounced the idea around with an iPhone developer I know. The problem is making it "do" something special. The Facebook app is a great example, but we don't really have the same functionality to adapt.

It's likely that a CSS for mobile browsers will be something we do first, but if I can find a compelling framework for an iPhone app, I'd be interested in making it happen.

Re: Slowtwitch iPhone App [Rappstar] [In reply to] Can't Post

1.) If you can figure out how to post a pic from your iPhone to a thread, that would rock.

2.) You could make the databases and tools avaliable. Retailers, Stack & Reach, Geometry Calc, etc., to help someone shop for a new bike. Something like a Buy Me a Bike app, using all the data in those tools and dbs to create a recommendation. Allows people to access the info while at their LBS.

3.) Find me a tri shop based on Location Based Services, accessing the Retailers database so they can see reviews.

4.) Create a "Post my Ride" app. This could use the GPS in the iPhone to do a basic tracking of their route, lay it on top of a map, such as Bing or Google, and upload it to a database here on ST. It would be great to have a database searchable for rides or runs so when I'm traveling I can track where I need to turn, etc.

5.) Pools and OWS locations database.

I could probably think of more.

The scenarios to think about is how to help a triathlete who is traveling find the info they need to train while they are away from home as well as a triathlete looking for a shop and specific data to help them make a good decision on a bike.

I think the traveling triathlete is the most compelling scenario.

Nice!! I would love to be able to travel to another city, and then have an encyclopedia of local rides, runs, and lbs at my fingertips.

You could make a web forum so much better with an app than in Safari. Look at what they did with Facebook (as mentioned before). A few other apps replace a browser and do a better job. I'm tempted to write one but I've never coded for the iPhone and I have training to do...

You will never be able to do that. Apple has a patent on that. That is why the iPhone will always be better than anything else.

That is not true - Apple does not have a "patent" on pinch/zoom or multi gesture screens.

Rappstar - might be easy to have something with Android 2.0 since open source?

Goog suggestions. I would gladly pay a few bucks for such an application, which is something I am rarely willing to do.

Re: Slowtwitch iPhone App [Rappstar] [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,
I don't know anything about the technical underpinnings of ST, but for the 2 VBulletin-based tri forum sites that I admin (http://www.seatri.org is the only one open to the general public), I added a server module from Tapatalk (http://www.tapatalk.com) to allow the sites to be used from their corresponding iPhone app. It currently supports VBulletin and phpBB3 forum software and an Android client is in the works in addition to iPhone. User response has been positive, and I prefer this app to the pinch / pan / squint approach that Safari requires, however much better Safari is than other mobile browsers I've tried.

The client supports login / logout, the usual forum / subforum thread / post browsing / posting, subscribed threads, latest posts, private messages, and viewing / posting pictures. The server is closed source and the client is for sale in the app Store for about $3. Given the closed source nature of the product, it seems unlikely that this product could be extended to support many of the tri-specific ideas I've seen for a mobile app, but I thought I would throw it out there as a concrete example of something that has already been done for sites with a significant discussion forum component.

Chris
