Savageman - Cdns going?
Can't Post
I'm thinking about postponing my 2008 retirement from half IMs after my seventh at Montreal (Esprit) on Sept.13 and am considering Savageman, if only because it seems like a good way to deliver one crushing final blow to the body for the year. Any Ottawa/Montreal people going down? Judging by last year's results, this truly looks tough. Long drive, though!

Not Canadian. Not racing it. But I did a mini camp there about 4 weeks ago and have wanted to post a review of the area for tri training. The lake is so clean you will want to drink the water. The run is hilly although I think they nixed the toughest climb because the trail washed out. The bike coures is SICK. I checked the results too and didn't believe it. I rode it twice and those results don't lie. There is something like 6000 ft of climbing, some of it relentless. I couldn't help to think how bad I want to race it but I'm finishing the year with IMKY. Next year I will race it and leave my tri bike at home. The long initial decent is tricky and you can kill it on a road bike. Then the climbing starts and there is no advantage with a tri bike. I would go as far to say you woud be slower on a tri bike unless you're Bjorn who will apparently try to destroy the bike there this year. The pavement is some of the smoothest I have ridden on. There is no traffic. The scenery is amazing. That race should be on every tiathlete's races to do list. Have fun.

Peter, I have to go to Asia Sep 1-10, so Esprit might be too tight after missing 10 more days of biking and dealing with the 12-13 hour time change twice in that period. I might consider Savageman as James and Rob are pushing me to join them. Kyle Yost has emailed me a few times about going down. If I do it, I will do it with no expectations but to enjoy the brutally hard course. How long is the drive?

I am not Canadian, but I am going to attempt it. Here is a picture of the bricks that were awarded and permanently placed on the Westernport Wall. A brick is only awarded to those who could climb the Wall without falling and who completed the entire course. Chris McDonald was the first.

Dev, You know you want a brick!
Here is a link to the slowtwitch post by Kyle Yost after last years inaugural event. There are video links to Chris McDonald, Mike Flanagan and others climbing the Wall.

Canada swept the womens podium at the inaugural SavageMan. I guess you Canucks can climb. I know Tara Norton is coming back, but she's from the Toronto area so a bit closer than Ottawa. Olivier M raced last year and loved it and is making the journey back from Ottawa to get his 2nd brick in the Wall.
Dev, as a fellow connoisseur of the finest cycling the planet has to offer, I am certain you will appreciate the SavageMan bike course as some of the finest riding you will find in North America. Extraordinary hills, beautiful scenery, smooth roads, and virtually no traffic.

it looks like a 7-8 hr drive from ottawa
would be a good way to finish off the body for the season (and I get 8, not 7, days of recovery after Esprit - bonus day at that point would be important)

Keep me posted....is this "drive down Saturday, drive back Sunday" after the race? I could also do a Friday PM departure (say 3 pm).
Here is the deal. If I come back from Asia on Sep 10th and am too cooked to get my ass to the track at Esprit on Sep 14th, then I will commit to Savageman. Seeing those videos, it is a must do! But for this year, I prefer to pack up the season at Esprit if I can.
