SHARK AT LOCAL SO CAL TRIATHLON Can't Post

Anyone else scared of this possible headline. Any shark experts out there. I have about 6 tri's lined up this summer all off the coast of southern california.

what are the chances I will be gobbled up by a big mean shark.

eventually I am going to have to go back to canada, because I'm canadain and I think I have to be there once in awhile.

If you make through the drive to the race, relax and enjoy the swim as the dangerous part will be over.

No matter were you swim in the ocean there are sharks nearby. I've seen 10 ft bull sharks (well known man eaters) only 200 metres off a very crowded popular beach while scuba diving. Just realize shark attacks happen as do lightening strikes, but both are quite rare.

If you swim in the ocean in Southern California, you are swimming with sharks. Just cuz you can't see them doesn't mean they aren't there. I've seen a bunch while diving. If that bothers you, don't swim in the ocean. Otherwise, the risk is so small as to be not worth it and, as a poster above noted, you can always be safe indoors.

Would you mind changing the title of the thread to something a little less SCREAMING, and the words you chose sound like there was an issue, rather than you freaking out about it

You'll be fine. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that sharks don't like to eat trolls.

LOL! Good one!

Just saw this "stat" coming across my phone the other day that more Americans have died in automobile accidents than in all America's wars combined.

When I vacationed in Mexico a couple of years ago my gf was afraid to get in the ocean because of sharks. I told her that more people die each year from falling coconuts than shark attacks.

It turns out that this is a myth but it helps people overcome their fear by putting it into a different perspective.

So you ride on roads inhabited by distracted drivers, drunks, and psychopaths, but sharks concern you? Myself, I'd just play the odds.

Unless the sharks are using cell phones while they're swimming, that is. Then I'd be worried.

I swim 2x a week in Newport Beach(Corona Del Mar) and don't think about it that much. If your racing you lower your odds of getting gobbled up:)
Your profile said your a HB surfer...some great whites at the pier:)

You are a 100% more likely to get attacked by a shark than hit by a car when swimming in the ocean

So you are saying that their aren't sharks on the road and cars in the ocean?

Doesn't H20 Dave have a water car? haha :)

Don't underestimate drivers these days. Give 'em a cell phone, let 'em text away, and they just might hit you in the ocean ;)

What? How do you figure? You actually 100% more likely to be hit by a car than attacked by a shark while riding.

The point is that trying to compare those probabilities is meaningless--and you are not alone in making this mistake. The probability of getting attacked by a shark goes up exponentially the more you swim in the ocean. It's comparing apples and oranges.

Steve
Sunday and Fri, around 8 or 9 this time of year. Untill last year I swam in HB from Magnolia to the pier. That's over two miles. Swimming in HB is a "true" ocean swim, CDM is easier and safer.....no surfers, waves, don't know about the sharks:)

Yea, come swim any time. There are quit a few other swimmers this time of year. I should be down there tomorrow. I will be wearing a DeSoto T1 top with speedtube bottoms. Let me know(PM)

BTW: I live in HB behind Big Lots on Beach Bl and Atlanta.

Very confusing. Statistics can be very misleading when they are not placed in context.

I agree. Especially because 42.6% of all statistical figures are just made up on the spot. (Not so with the stats on shark attacks against cyclists, however - that's based on a Norwegian study published a few years ago. I'd give you a link, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.)

Again, the comparison is meaningless. Read the article.

Here's a fact. The more you swim in the ocean, the chances of getting attacked by a shark go up exponentially.

You're wrong. The more you swim in the ocean, you're chances of getting attacked by a shark go up in a linear fashion, not an exponential one. Like FD, I guess math wasn't your strongest subject right?

And maybe not even strictly linear as shark populations continue to diminish.

Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate,
but that we are powerful beyond measure.

Soulswimmer - maybe you should just concede the point to Aerobike. I hadn't realized when I made my previous posts that he lives in South Africa, which makes him the resident expert on great white sharks.

BTW, I live in coastal Maine. Can I be the resident Slowtwitch expert on lobster behavior, or does Tigerchik already have dibs on that?
