Racing with a 405... Can't Post

The 405 is a new running tool for me. I have been doing training with it and it's great. I did a race today and it never synched up with the GPS before I left T1. Tried to start it a couple of times on the bike, but no dice. Came back to T2, hit training button again, no sync. Tried to at least start the stop watch so I could time the run, but no luck.
It is only couple weeks old and I only have 6 runs with it, so maybe I'm just not as familiar with it as I should be. But it seems that if you moving more than just a walk it takes a long time (or in some cases) it has trouble hooking up the GPS function. If anyone has so tips I would really like to hear them.
Thanks

I have the 305 and if you don't stand still then it doesn't sync! When I tried to use it when I ran along the river here in town someone had to tell me where to stand in the parking lot to get it to sync. You litterally have to stand in one place to sync! Move twenty feet and it'll eventually ask you if you've moved since your last use or if you're inside. I've also lost signal on a run after it had been in sync, and it never sync'd back up on the run! When it stays in sync it is probably my favorite training tool, but it can be really frustrating at times.

clear the cache and update the firmware (if you haven' done so). Clear the cache by holding down the up arrow key while powering it up. Mine acquires satellites within 30 sec if the location is the same as last one. It acquires in about 2 min if the location has changed markedly from the last known location. hope this helps. thanks

I had the same issue last weekend at the SC Half. It eventually synched up, but I ran into other issues. Getting the bezel wet from sweat and/or sponges seems to confuse the thing. It seems like the bezel assumed I was touching it and it kept beeping at me and changing screens (every screen but the one I actually wanted to see). I didn't think to lock the bezel, which might have fixed it. I was eventually able to get it dry enough to exit everything and shut it up.

mine's synched up inside a few times. If I've moved a great deal since the last time I used it (like today when i came back from VA to NC) it took a bit longer to sync up.

So maybe an option is pre race sync it up, then when T1 comes it hooks up quicker. I have another race next weekend and I'll try that.

I would think that hitting the start/stop button would at least start the stop watch? I will also reread the manual again to see if I missed something.

Did you swim with it? My 405 syncs with the Sats pretty quickly, even when I went from SF to Cancun two weeks ago, it found the satellites quickly. I've worn it on the swim twice, however, and after each time, it took a long time for it to start working normally (and actually find the satellites). The first time was at a local Oly and it never really worked right that day even on the run. My plan in Cancun was to wear it only on the run (wore my Suunto on my left wrist for total running time), but I forgot and wore it during the swim. Again, it couldn't sync until the run, but once it did, it was fine. (Never worked on the bike though, which was fine cause I didn't need it there).

Did not wear it during the swim, just left it in T area. I agree that it sync’s up pretty quick standing still, but not so quick while moving. Maybe there is a way to tell it that it does not need to get every Sat in view, just the first three, then work on the rest on the fly. Really on the run during a race I probably would not even look at for pace for a min or two. Once you get out and settled into the run then pace is important... but I understand that time period would be different for everyone. I'm sure there is at least a way to just start the stop watch, if I read the manual more than once. Just a little frustrating that is it a great training tool and I could not use it during a race.

Re: Racing with a 405... [Britter] [In reply to] Can't Post

Update the firmware. Apparently there was an issue with the Sat. synch speed that was fixed in the most recent firmware update. I've done a lot of traveling with it over the last month and it's never failed to sync in under a minute, where it used to take 3-4 minutes.

Re: Racing with a 405... [Britter] [In reply to] Can't Post

I skimmed through the responses, and I am sure that someone had some very technical answers that surpass mine, but I have a 305, and I simply turn it on before I swim, or have someone that is with me start it as I am getting close to finishing the swim(if I am doing a longer race and worried about battery life).

Re: Racing with a 405... [Britter] [In reply to] Can't Post

I have a 305 not a 405. What I do is when I leave transition for the swim start, I turn it on and set it to bike mode, that way when I get to T1 it's ready to go. I also do not do the run with it so battery life is not an issue.
