Question - One of my runners has cramping
Can't Post
One of my young (13) triathletes has cramping off the bike and through the whole run. We have tried everything. She has run consistently, has done speedwork and has lots of endurance work both on the bike and on the run.
Any ideas?

this happens to me when i start biking a lot more than usual. it helps when i stretch out my position more and am not hunched over as much. also working on core helps me.

in the front, side or back and on the left or right? Sharp shooting pain, uneasy pain or subtle dull pain? When/what causes it to start and how long does it linger? Only when running? (a good Dr. will ask all these questions - but I would bring the specific info into a Dr.) How far out from eating is she running? Is she eating?
Some of the basic things to think about - fats, sugars, carbonation (soda) - these will all cause severe cramping - the carbonation sometimes will mimic heart burn - quite a lovely feeling really. The obvious lack of electrolytes I am sure you have already investigated.
Any recent falls blows or trauma - slightly broken/misaligned ribs can cause severe pain when breathing - then breathing hard can cause cramping.

LOL! OK - that pretty much rules out compartment syndrome ;-)
Does she describe it as a side stitch or cramping? You can google/read pub med articles to your heart's content as there no fully unerstood reason for them. Good luck!

Paradoxical breathing? She may be using 'more' of the wrong muscles to breath, than she is using the 'right' ones. Or she could possibly have trigger points in her intercostals (the muscles that lie inbetween the ribs). Her cramping would feel more dull and achy than sharp and local. If it's sharp and local, there is likely something else going on.
My thoughts are strictly from a Clinical Massage Therapy perspective!
