Concerning the penalties, each rider cannot score less than zero, so in your above example Valverde wouldn't cost your team any points, he just wouldn't score anything."
i believe you're wrong about that. i think if you choose a guy with -75 to be on your team, and he crashes out on the first day, you've got to absorb that -75 into your team score at the end.
I don't think so. Here's what it says:
Note
:
Overall points for a rider can never be less than zero (no negative total).
So that rider's points would not affect your team in any way, positively or negatively. The only way it would hurt you is you'd have one less rider that could get you points.

By the way, (again not following), but I heard that Frank Schleck had a major crash this spring...is he good to go? What's Valverde been doing (no, he is not on my list due to big handicap).
Dev
Schleck's fine. Valverde has had a stellar year as always despite racing less than usual. He won L-B-L again, and in the last couple of weeks has won the GC + 2 stages at the Dauphine and the Spanish National Championship, leading
some
to believe he might be peaking a bit too early.

Kinda like Iban Mayo flying in Dauphine 2004 burying Lance and Tyler Hamilton on Ventoux ITT with a record from Bedouin and then "cratering in the TdF"....regardless, Valverde has too many handicap points to put on the roster...at least that's my thinking.

Frank Schleck went over a railing and landed in a tree at Tour De Suisse. Quite spectacular, he overshoots a corner in a descent, goes over a railing and falls out of view. It looked so bad that the other guy on the breakaway stopped, turned around and checked if he was ok.
I am sure Versusl will show that footage again and again.
Also, I am in.

Actually, I watched it live. The other rider in the break did not turn around or stop. He hammered on to win the stage.

You are right. It was another rider, also in blue checking on him. I only saw the edited version, like this one :

Sat down with Mr. Laptop this morning and decided on our team. We talked about our objectives for the race. At the end of the meeting we decided "We might as well win." :)

Okay, that's a bold statement... too bad you did not consult with me before making it! ;)
Seriously, this will probably turn out into some classic trash talk, with a different spin then the usual smackdown. But then again, how long will it take before some one comments on seat height?

That's the spirit!
Ha, no in this crowd I am pretty confident I will get smashed like a gel packet. I am halfway through Bruyneel's book (hence the quote) so I am trying to apply that to the race...but so far pretty much comes down to this...no one on my team is named Armstrong or Contador, I am not Belgian, and I have no clue how to evaluate talent. But, I know that the monkey picking stocks often does better than the portfolio managers, so who knows. :)

That about sums it up for me too. I do follow pro cycling a bit, but not in depth enough for those hidden little gems and to have knowledge of all the "need to know" things.
The way I see it, and it's the case in many pools, one of the key thing is simply to make sure to take care of your crew every day. You will find after the rush of the first week, many just forget about it and don't care anymore.
Of course, in this one we can't swap riders and moves like that, but paying attention to who is on your lineup and when will help.

OK guys, stage 1 has started....as promised, this is the lineup I am starting this Tour with. At the 11th hour (OK, 11 pm last nite, I kicked David Miller off my team on account of there being no prologue and added Menchov....Menchov better perform and overcome his 25 point handicap). I'm starting this Tour in a 95 point hole, so Oscar Periero and Menchov better so some good things. I might regret having Moreau on my team, but he is likely good for some points at the end of the GC. Today I am sitting out all my climbers.....Beltran, Zubeldia, and Egoi Matinez. I am hoping that Egoi can score me some KOM points. Frank Schleck and Jen Voigt better get in a breakaway or two. Zabel, McEwan, Cavendish better score some solid sprint point. Zabel may have lost some legs, but I'm counting him to make it to Paris with numerous 3rd to 5th place stage finishes. Finally Cancellara was my pick (with zero derating) for the Prologue....but there is none, however, I kept him on my team, hoping that he can stay in good position and take the first ITT and yellow and he has proven in the past that he can win a bunch sprint. We'll, that's it....that's my strategy or lack thereof! In hindsight I should have kept Oscar Friere on my team, but felt that Periero might end up with a reasonably good ride if/when his team leader chokes and he has to assume that mantle for his team.

As per the request, here you go.
Ciolek (Columbia); Voigt (CSC); Moreau (Agritubel); Pieopeli (Saunier Duval); Hunter (Barloworld); Valverde (C d'E) - 50pts.; Millar (Garmin); Beltran (Liquigas); Vandevelde (Garmin); Devolder (Quick Step); Martinez, Egoi (E-E); Cavendish (Columbia).
Can't argue with your logic on team selection, since much of it followed mine! This is fun.
I miss you "Sports Night"
