We can discuss strategy after the end of the Tour. I have my own plan but that would change year to year. I won't say what I'm basing my picks/strategy on either. But it should be fun regardless.

Why isn't Paul Thomas playing? Is he banned since he works for Kuota or did he just pick the entire Agritubel team?

"Why isn't Paul Thomas playing?"

now that he's in tucson, i think he's too hot and tired to get up off the couch and crawl to his computer.

I'm in.

As far as I can tell, the French are trying to rig the race somehow, I assume it is to benefit the French riders.

Entonces, nothing but Frenchies for me.

i'm in!

the handicap made it much harder to pick a team. i picked mostly riders with low or no handicap and stayed away from the -75 guys... let's see if that pays off...

Well, I picked my team yesterday afternoon with all guys with no handicaps. Of course, I tossed and turned all night over my selections, and even during my training ride this morning... So I now have all day to second guess myself and pull out the calculator to see if it's worth taking a few guys with lower handicaps... Just hope it will be a slow day at the office!!

Okay, I have to ask, since it's been bugging me since last night...

Anyone else wondering how legit this pool is? That's a lot of prize $$ for a fantasy pool on pro biking. Heck, some of the big names internet hockey pools don't give out that much $$ in prizes.

I can see the company is in Quebec (my own province) but not much info on who is running the pool, etc.

Then again, it could just be me...

I has some issues with my account yesterday, and I contacted the admin from probikepool and he tells me that there are over 1000 players in this thing. I'm trying to pick riders without handicaps, but it really is no fun. I think Robbie McEwan and Erik Zabel are great picks to overcome their handicap and net some points. Cadel Evans comes with a ridiculously massive 75 point penalty, but the guy that really baffles me is Soler with a 50 pt handicap. I think you want guys with minimal handicap who have a good chance to finish the tour. Guys who drop out who have a handicap could really punish your final tally since you only have 9 to field each day and if you lose 5 guys then you are in trouble....I did not read the rules carefully, but say you pick Valverde with a 50 point handicap and he crashes out in week 1, does your team carry the 50 pt handicap right to the end....I believe it does!

OK, once this thing kicks off, how about everyone post their team roster so we can see "who we are up against"....just like being a real directeur sportif...kinda hard to race against "phantom teams"

Re: ProBikePool roll call. Who's in? [devashish_paul] [In reply to] Can't Post

OK, I am sharing my strategy, so that maybe we can get a bunch of ST guys on the probikepool podium. Admittedly, I have only been following a minimal amount of pro biking this year (I guess I waste too much time talking about high seats, weights/no weight, and training day on ST).

Looks like you need the following:
  1. guys with low or zero handicaps who can win sprint stages...I'm thinking that it is good to stack your team with sprinters who can actually finish the TdF and consistently get into the top 5 on sprint stages
  2. guys with low handicaps that you can bank on for a high GC position and do well at TT's
  3. unknown (to North American viewers) Spanish or Columbian 130 lb climbers who can pop some good stage points and mountain points when the road pitches up
  4. One "breakaway" rouleur guy who can get in 10 man break on a transition stage, get a top placing and slide in the yellow Jersey...this guy also need to be highly placed in in the prologue or first TT to make sure that his gains in a breakaway can pop him into yellow

OK, all you smart guys, tell us more!!!

From the rules:

  • Some riders identified as favourites will be handicapped (points penalty) to avoid them being selected by most of the participants (see below). Keep that in mind when choosing your riders! Note: Overall points for a rider can never be less than zero (no negative total).

  • That sounds about right! And lets post our roster tomorrow - good idea!

OK, good to see that the overall points for a rider cannot be sub zero, so if a gc stud or sprinter crashes out, and has not surpassed his point handicap,, you won't be dinged.

So I have picked my list that I might tweak before everything kicks off....right now if I add the handicaps of all my guys, I'm there is a cumulative 70 pts of handicap, so you can imagine, that I picked zero guys with more than 25.

Sounds solid Dev. Only thing in regards to sprinters is that this year will be less of "sprinters" tour than others. So the question is: how many of them do you want sitting on your roster? I think a guy that is a good sprinter but can also follow the peloton in the first week could be a good pick. You would want that guy to still be in good standings after the medium mountain stages (6-7) for a potential good sprint result in stage 8. Or something like that!

My first cut yesterday had a bit too sprinters. So I rejigged a bit this morning. Hopefully I am done now.

I think I need to get all over google at lunch time to research all those Columbian and Spanish 130 lbs guys that we hear nothing about, but who keep winning all kinds of stages in "anonymity" from March-May in Spain. I ditched Magnus Backstedt off my team, for the very reason you pointed out....I think he is only of utility in this pool in week 1....what do you guys think about Robbie Hunter's form....good, bad, dog?

By the way, (again not following), but I heard that Frank Schleck had a major crash this spring...is he good to go? What's Valverde been doing (no, he is not on my list due to big handicap).

Soler actually has a 75 point penalty. It's because he would have been one of the highest scorers, if not the highest, from last year as he won a stage, finished in the top 10 of several others, won the polka-dot jersey and led in the competition for several days, finished 2nd in the white jersey competition(to Contador who isn't racing), and also finished high on gc. He also would have won aggressive rider points.

Concerning the penalties, each rider cannot score less than zero, so in your above example Valverde wouldn't cost your team any points, he just wouldn't score anything.

i believe you're wrong about that. i think if you choose a guy with -75 to be on your team, and he crashes out on the first day, you've got to absorb that -75 into your team score at the end.
