PowerTap Software Can't Post

PowerAgent 7.2 is crap. What are my options. I have read that Training Peaks is the way to go. Are there any others ? Thoughts , comments.

Thx,
Jim

Try RaceDay at RaceDay.com Pretty nice, and can do a ton, including performance prediction.

wko+ is great. raceday i am getting used to, but like it alot... part of what I do for clients, I still use a spreadsheet for.

golden cheetah has QA built in, which is awesome to get at one click, but the control over the appearance is poor.

Thanks. I will look at those. Can't believe that the PT software was that brutal. My Polar software is awesome, even the Garmin software ( when it works ) is more user friendly. Think Saris should should invest some cash and hire a few programmers, it is years behind.

raceday.com goes to a ticket purchase site. Is there a different spelling??

np.

GAWD... the garmin app is horrible...

are you PC or mac? for mac look at trailrunnerx, for pc, topofusion (which can actually combine gps and power in nice map display!). I also use the NG topo software (x-platform!!)

and there was a promo for raceday and topofusion - 25% off somewhere... dunno where.

My buddy has the Garmin, used it for IMLP. The software has been terrible, can't even print out the data. Took two weeks and a lot of installs to get it to see the 305. Would never get one.

If you have a question about RaceDay, please PM me or drop me an e-mail since it is my product. It does some things that WKO+ does not, and you get me on the end of the phone for tech support / assistance in using it to plan your training.

Re: PowerTap Software [JimH] [In reply to] Can't Post

related question for PM software users: What are the most important features, data you get out of your software? just got a powertap and don't see how the power agent software is so bad, besides not having NP/IF/TSS but those are easy enough to calculate w/ a spreadsheet. I'm thinking of writing a matlab program to do power file analysis since I have a bit more time than money right now, plus I get a kick out of getting exactly what I want out of the data, things like finding the best lag/time average correlation between power and HR, for example, or merging w/ topo data and calculating CdA. Some sort of impulse-response model like raceday would be cool too, but I'd have to do a little more reading up on those equations to understand what it's really calculating.

Hi Phil - thanks for contributing to this discussion. Your post got me looking at the physfarm website - it looks like you have a good product. I do have a technical question. Let's say I start using RaceDay but don't like it and want to go back to my PowerAgent software. Would it be possible to export my PowerTap files for re-import into PowerAgent? Or does RaceDay change them into another format that cannot be used with the PowerAgent software?

Thanks for the help.

Andy

Hi Andy,

Every time you open a power file in Raceday, there is a clearly marked button that reads 'Export CSV'. So, it's a piece of cake to send your power data to WKO or PowerAgent or whatever.

Also, all of your data is stored in an easy to read database format. Anyone can write a program to access it if they wanted. This is a stark contrast to WKO, which stores all data in a proprietary format (binary) so that you have no choice but to go through their program to access it. They don't give the file spec to anyone, which prevents users from easily moving to another platform (obviously, undesireable from their point of view).

What if the file were from an SRM - can you export it as an appropriately-formatted .txt?

Re: PowerTap Software [Andrew Coggan] [In reply to] Can't Post

It will export a PT compatible .CSV only at this time. We'll be adding SRM format .TXT export in a later version.

(Curiously, no one ever asked for this until a week or two ago. They all wanted .SRM import and .CSV export.)

FWIW, Kevin went this way because the original PowerTap software stored all of the data in a Microsoft Access database. That meant that not only did their software have to install and register all of the components of Access on your computer, but that the database would grow to an enormous size in a relatively short period of time (i.e., by 10-20 Mb/y), which made initiating the program very slooooooooooooooooooooooooow. The binary file approach (also used by SRM) avoids these problems, and also means that the raw data remain unchanged regardless of what new analyses or means of manipulation might be developed. For example, the normalized power for a given file isn't stored as part of that file, which means that the file itself doesn't have to be re-written (and possibly corrupted) should the algorithm for calculating normalized power by changed.

So the file you export contains none of the original values, but substitutes interpolated ones (to match the recording intervals). Ugh. :-)

No, it exports a .CSV that preserves the recording interval of the original SRM data.

And the PowerTap software will read that correctly? That's news to me (then again, I haven't used their software in quite a while).

True, but if that were the only reason, they'd happily provide the file spec to anyone who wanted it, and not send nasty email to people who publicly state they'd like to reverse engineer the format ;-)

However, I don't see what the binary file format has to do with making sure the data is unchanged. For instance, RaceDay stores everything in a database, and calculates XP, BikeScore, etc on the spot. It isn't actually stored in the file.

No, the PowerTap software doesn't care. Apparently, the sampling interval is a hardware limitation in their head unit that is not carried over to their software.

(I just did a test run to be sure I wasn't about to put my foot in my mouth :-) )

Sorry for the bad link. I'm glad Phil got on to contribute. I'll tell you, I've NEVER had the support that he gives with a product(and not because of a problem). He was good enough to call me and walk me through the program......quite a perk. It's a very nice product, and our team is moving to use it, with Phil's help! Try it.....
