Planning an Ironman week...
Can't Post
How soon do you usually arrive before the race and then stay in town afterwards? I don't know all the events that occur before and after. I am planning for IMWI, and I was thinking that I would stay Thurs to Mon. However, I read someone's (parkito -- I think...) RR, and there is a lunch the next day(?). I know there is the pre-race dinner, of course. Anything else?
So, is Thurs. arrival and departing on Tuesday the ideal? Or, do you leave on Monday evening?
Has anyone stayed at America's Best Value Inn for IMWI? The one on Hwy 12-18?

Thursday through Tuesday sounds okay. Are you bringing children or other family members? For me, I like to arrive on Friday morning/early afternoon and leave Monday morning if possible. I don't live too far from Madison (about 5 hours), so I've done the IM there and drove home that same evening. That works for me because it saves the cost of another night in a hotel (I'm very cheap).

Yeah, some of it depends on how far away you're coming from and who you have with you. If traveling with kids, and coming from further away, arriving Thursday is a good call. It allows an extra day in case your flights are canceled, and also gives you time to acclimate to any time zone change.
As far as how long to stay, all three IM's I've done had awards DINNERS the day after the event, so leaving Tuesday was what I did.

Check out the last day to register. I think it is (officially any ways) Friday. I showed up in 2004 too late on Friday and was allowed to register on Saturday. Made for a very stressful night wondering if they would let me sign up. I wouldn't risk it again :).
As far as after the race--there is nothing to do on Monday. Get your pictures and get out of town. I can't imagine staying until Tuesday for any reason. I am about 5 hours away though so maybe I am more ready to get back home. *shrug*
