Over Cross-Chaining? Can't Post

What do you consider over cross-chaining)? Small ring in front and 7th, 8th, 9th and/or 10th smallest in rear? Big ring in front and 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th biggest in rear? I'm thinking 7th or 8th is OK...9th or 10th is overly cross-chained.

Thanks for the math lesson. Your answer leaves out a lot of gearing in between. My question is about OVER cross-chaining.

I usually try to avoid the two smallest cogs when in the small chainring and the two largest cogs when in the big chain ring. But I'll go one more if I'm racing and I think I only need to be in it for a short while.

with today's index shifting. I don't get cross chaining.. the only time I do is when I'm riding my 12-28..and that's when I'm on the 52. Any other time I can run my 52/39 with my 12-25, my 11-23 or my 11-25 and not get any cross chaining.. I migh get a little rub on the 25.. but hardly notice it...

BUT if you're loosing 3 gears on each Chainring.. find a better wrench or learn how to adjust you RD & FD your self, it is really fairly easy to do..

I think you may have misunderstood me, or perhaps I explained it poorly.

I'm don't get any rub in any gear and I'm a perfectly good wrench myself; I do try to keep as straight chain line as possible.

I see no need to use small-small or large-large gearing, or even small-2nd smallest or large-2nd largest gearing except in rare situations, like popping over a short steep hill.

Yes, that's what I was getting at. I'm just thinking the straighter the chain...the more optimal in general if you're gonna be there for 56 miles or so. I typically ride in the big ring but this particular course is flat and windy so staying in the small ring will allow me more subtle changes in gearing/resistance when adjusting the rear (even though I will be on the small side of the cassette). Thanks.

ok. so what cassette are you running... ON flat courses.. I run and 11-23; which give me 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 21, 23
verses a 12- 25 which I see a lot of folks riding give you.. 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25

on the 12-25 you have a TWO tooth jump on half your gears, while the 11-23 only on the last three... I find it keeps the chain straighter.. and easier to find a good gear to spin on flat courses...

just my .02

I always thought that running big-big and small-small was too much cross chaining, but acceptable for short periods of time (short hills, etc) if changing the FD is going to considerably upset your position/power out put. I don't think that you do too much damage to your drive train with cross chaining since drivetrains are so robust now.
