Other than me and Monty, who else races without goggles? Can't Post

Back from the old lifeguarding days, I race without swim goggles. Even in ocean races in Southern California. The trick to keeping your eyes from stinging is.....KEEP THEM OPEN!

Well, my last few races I ended up swimming with goggles full of water. Does that count?

I did an olympic without this year as mine broke after a few hundred meters. Really didn't enjoy it because of the haziness.

I guess I am curious why you would want to swim without goggles?

Sure if you are lifeguarding that's one thing - but in a race - why?

Finally - after getting stung by a jelly fish twice in two days before IMFL - I'm glad I had my goggles. My left eye would be seriously screwed up otherwise.

Same here. I have -15.0 myopia. If I don't have lenses, I effectively cannot see anything.

I'm not nearly that bad, but it is still annoying not to be able to recognize who is cheering you on.

So do you get to race with a leader dog or what? ;-)

I wear them but Chris McCormack does not always. I remember seeing a picture on here of a race start. Every but him running into the water with them on. He was later asked about it, left over from growing up near the ocean in Australia.

I think ones reaction to salt water must be an individual thing...I am former lifeguard as well but don't like swimming without them. A few years ago I lost mine right before start of Big Kahuna in Santa Cruz (while trying to be cool and body surfing in a wave) and when I finished and reached the beach after the 1.2, I swore the fog came back in...but no it was just my eyes reaction to the salt water. But hell, i can't swim in chorlene either without goggles...my eyeballs just go nuts.

One of my friends does this.

I don't want to try swimming without goggles using contacts, which is the main reason I won't try it.

Glasses since the age of 5, contacts on dry land since age 8. Prescription goggles in middle school because a coach was concerned because I could literally not see the wall well enough to flip turn in good form, and then, after never finding appropriately strong prescription goggles that fit my face, swedes and contact lenses in the water since high school.

I am very very thankful for modern optic technology. If I'd been born in the Middle Ages, I would have been so screwed.

It is much easier swimming through surf without them, easier catching waves coming back in, no worries about them getting knocked off, or getting foggy, or fill with water.

But I do admit Atlantic saline content as well as in Hawaii and other South Pacific Islands is much different than in Southern California.

agreed it is an individual thing, and of course if you wear contacts, goggles are must. i can swim in chlorine without them but not for long. water polo players do pretty well, but their heads are out of the water most of the time.

Re: Other than me and Monty, who else races without goggles? [Emilio] [In reply to] Can't Post

In 25 years that I've been doing open water swimming in swim/triathlon events, I've never worn goggles in some 100 races. The swimming has been done in the Pacific NW in fresh water lakes/rivers. I also lived on a small lake for 18 years and never wore goggles swimming there. If I were to swim in salt water, I would wear goggles. Even though I've worn glasses since grade school, sighting/navigation has not been a problem. In fact, compared to pool swimming, I'm faster in open water.

Not sure I would be comfortable doing it on a regular basis. I've done swim practices in the pool before without goggles, and that was always a good incentive to never forget them again. It's not so much the swimming part that bothers me, it's the horrible, burning, dried-out feeling that comes afterward that sucks.

I have considered just taking them off once they fill up with water, but I never want to bother losing my groove, so I just keep going with the gaskets full. Besides, it makes for a more interesting race when you can't really see anything!

Yeah, you don't really get too much water in your eyes during a game of water polo. It's usually a pretty bad idea to even put your head under water (think: knee to the face), so it doesn't become much of a problem.

Are you "testing the waters" for a new product here? Selling people "no goggles"?

Chris 'Macca' McCormack at the '2008 Monaco 70.3'

Have been swimming not far from here at 'Ville France' beach in 2007 without goggles and the salt water was stinging to my eyes. It seemed like the Mediteranean Sea was even more salty than what I expected.

Exact shot. Should have figured it was yours. I laugh at the picture because he (Macca) has such a surprised look on his face.
