Official Beijing TRIATHLON Olympics thread, pics...
Can't Post
*
*** First PICTURE gallery is up: 100 pictures of the women's triathlon!
http://iwilltri.com/...show-the-womens-100/
Ok since I will be there in 4 days I figured I'd start it off right now as we here in the US watch opening ceremonies.
*some rules since threads get out of control (current steelhead, brett sutton, gordoIMC etc are examples).
1) this thread is for TRIATHLON - its not track cycling, the bike road race, torres, phelps, powercranks, etc...even if those are all interesting and worthy of OTHER threads :)
2)this is about TRIATHLON and the olympics.
3) let the games begin!
Women's race: August 18th at 10am local Beijing time at the Ming Tomb Reservoir - 10k spectators.
Men's race: August 19th at 10am local Beijing time " "

thank you! I am so pumped.
here is the number of total triathletes competing by country - as background info, countries have to have enough points to qualify per male/female and the most each country can take are 3 triathletes (ie for example Australia failed to get enough pts this year so Greg Bennett is not competing anymore).
#
6: New Zealand, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, United States
5: Australia, France, Japan, Great Britain, Russia
4: Spain, Italy, Austria
3: Portugal, Czech Republic, Poland, China, South Africa, Brazil
2: Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ukraine, Netherlands, Mexico
1: Bermuda, Syria, Estonia, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Chile, Sweden, Greece, Hungary, Denmark, Slovakia
if you want the background bios on each triathlete go here:

I can't remember the maker of it, but he has it hooked up to a computer so he is running on the Beijing course - elevation changes and all. It's like having a computrainer or tacx for running - pretty sweet.

ok im heading to bed, but here is a little recount of Sideny that I found on the official site - Conrad the man back then!
"When Simon Whitfield was younger, he decided that someday he wanted to be included in the Encyclopedia Britannica. He realized that for an athlete to be included, he would have to be the best in the world in something. Whitfield, who had joint Canadian-Australian citizenship, was not one of the favorites at the Olympics. He was ranked thirteenth in the world and had not won a triathlon in a year. But while training at the Olympic Village, he was amazed at how fit he felt. Conrad Stoltz of South Africa and world champion Olivier Marceau of France broke away from the field during the fifth of six bike laps and opened up a lead of almost a minute. On that same lap, a 15-man crash occurred and Whitfield was forced to put his foot down and skid to a stop. He began the 10km run in 24th place. Stoltz faded while Marceau held on for six kilometers, before being passed by Stephan Vuckovic of Germany. Whitfield, who had gradually moved his way up through the field, caught Vuckovic, but with 1'000m to go, the German opened up a lead of almost 25m. Whitfield cut the gap in half and then began his final sprint with 450m left. He passed Vuckovic about 200m from the finish line and won easily. At the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, Simon Whitfield finished in 11th place."

by the way, lenovo has one of the sweetest interactive guides I have seen for the olympics. its over here:
http://2008.lenovo.com/
oh and the mask scandal isnt dying any time soon. The usa tri team will be going to SouthKorea (as many other countries are doing) for all of next week.
"Two U.S. triathletes, Matt Reed and Hunter Kemper, also wore masks for a jog around the Olympic village. Matt Reed said the heat made it difficult to breathe comfortably during his run around the Olympic Village and he won't wear it again while working out.
But that might be the only time he goes maskless in Beijing.
Whether going out in Beijing or walking around the village, he's going to wear the mask to cover his nose and mouth.
"I definitely am conscious (of perceptions) and I don't want to offend anyone," Matt Reed said, "but I'm out for my own health, really. I'm sure they know the air quality is not good, so I don't see it's that bad wearing a mask."
Triathlete Jarrod Shoemaker, who wore a mask before qualifying for the U.S. team during the Beijing World Cup in September, noted the skies had changed from "more yellow and dark" last year to a whitish color. Shoemaker said the sky "doesn't look as bad, but you can still kind of taste it."
"We take the precautions we need to," triathlon team leader Scott Schnitzspahn said. "We're still far enough out from our competition that a little exposure isn't going to really affect them too much. But we still don't want them running around sucking on a tailpipe.""

even more interesting: from sutton:
"yes the other teams arrive soon
but too late ,
no win from them , they have the travel wrong, and in beging , you think you do heat training now , your kidding , we be doing it for 2 yrs already
the early birds have already go 2 nice blocs of training in , and like you guys, the acting short guys are all on fire .
so they will be ready , by the time other teams ready to train , we will be finnished and ready to go .
they make a big mistake ,
we nail em .
jeju is good very good ."
Jeju is an island in South Korea where a bunch of teams are going to...

Is it going to be on NBC? Or on one of their other channels showing Olympic coverage? If so does anyone know what channel and what day/time?
Don't want to miss Reed give the USA a G-O-L-D!
Jerry: What you're suggesting is illegal.
Kramer: It's not illegal!
Jerry: It's against the law.

Oh, wow. It's just so incomprehensible that I figured either English was his sixth language or he was illiterate.
It's not so much his spelling as it is his entirely incomprehensible sentence structure and cryptic grammar.

I'm surprised we haven't seen people post their top 3.
I'll say that one of the 2 favorites (emma snowsill and vanessa f) will not be on the podium. I do think youll see1 American girl on it and then a surprise as always .

I think that we will not see anyone from North America on the podium for the women. I do think that we will see both Emma and Vanessa on the podium and yes one surprise finisher that will be between Emma and Vanessa. I am thinking that it will either be a British or Swiss athlete.
As for the Men's race. I think that Gomez, Whitfield and Hug. I think that Team Canada will approach this a bit differently than they did at the last Olympic and I think the "TEAM" will race differently than all the others, which will put Whitfield on the podium for a second time. I do think that Gomez will however win the Gold and Simon will get the Silver just outsprinting Hug at the line.

I think the funny thing is when you really look at the start list above, you can start re-arranging the podium in so many diff ways. Rasmus can win, so can ocherty, so can don, and of course javier is gettin a spot on the podium, and the list goes on....
im standing behind my view of 1 american girl on podium!
