Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon Can't Post

Anyone else here doing this race. I've been lurking here for a while and thought I would bring this to all of your attention in case anyone was interested. I ran this last year as a team of 4 and it was a blast. Check it out!

Re: Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon [NoleRx] [In reply to] Can't Post

I just saw last years race on HD tv this week, they did an hour show on Adventure sports. Looked really cool, but I have one question about the swim course. They advertise a 1/4 mile swim, but the times of the best swimmers were 10 to 12 minutes. WHat was the deal there??? That is way long, it should be about 4 to 5 minutes..After watching, I began to get an idea of putting together a legands team of old farts like me. I wonder what Dave and Skid are doing that weekend?????

Re: Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon [monty] [In reply to] Can't Post

Last year the swim was 0.5 miles long. They've changed the distances this year to exactly 1/10 of an Iron distance race. It's definitely a fun race and it's interesting to try and figure out the logistics of it all.

Plus I believe it's all you can drink beer and Red Bull...at least it was last year :)

Re: Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon [NoleRx] [In reply to] Can't Post

That makes a lot more sense. Still a little long for half mile, but at least in the ballpark. I love the logistics of a race like this. I wish that there was some minimun events that every person had to do on the relays. It would even out the strictly one event people going against true 2 or 3 event athletes. I'll be looking at this one a little closer in the next couple months for sure....

Re: Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon [monty] [In reply to] Can't Post

The swim times from last year included a .26 mile round trip total (at least I think that was the distance) run to the beach from transition. Minimum events would be cool but it's nice to be able to trade out of a weakness into a strength at 2:30 am with one of your teammates. Last year I traded a couple of bikes for runs and it worked out well.

Maybe you don't know, but I couldn't find on the site if they do the AG relays by total age, or is it by youngest on the team that determines category????

Re: Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon [monty] [In reply to] Can't Post

No age group, it's by total number of team members. solo, 2-man, 3-man, and then 4+. It sounds hard to win but last year we were beating people with 8 man teams and the age range of my team was 37-54.

Our team name last year was Operation Ground and Pound and will remain so for this years race!

Re: Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon [NoleRx] [In reply to] Can't Post

Two co-workers have cajoled me into joining them. They were signed up as a team of two, and now we will be three, one is a runner, and the other is a biker. The biker has aspirations of going 200 miles, and the runner has a goal of running 40. The lacking discipline is you guessed it: the swim... I am not afraid. I grew up swimming. But now I swim only a few times a year, maybe twice at the inlaws, once across the lake at vacation, and then my 1/2 ironman everyear (I was in the 5430 two weeks ago). FWIW, the swim is the strongest portion of my 1/2 ironman (it is the price I pay for being poor, not training, and taking 6weeks of vacation before the race (kind of an accidental reverse taper)).

I am really not sure what I am getting into. Does anyone who has competed in this race before have an idea as to how much I will be the weak link with a 40 minute 1/2 ironman swim? The biker recently biked 200 flat miles in a paceline with 10 hours on bike time and the runner recetly did the pikes peak mary (in storming conditions, they closed it 1/2 way) in 4 hours. I was planning on bringing my tri-bike and running shoes to help out when I can (you cannot swim during the dark) but I was worried I will be so trashed from trng to keep up the swim laps, that it might be a mute point.

Any thoughts?

Any pointers on tactics and such?

Thanks in advance

Re: Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon [Inspiredbutired] [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, first the good news...the swim is only 0.24 miles! Now the bad news, in order to complete the approx +/-20 total tri's you guys are looking at you will have to swim about 5 miles. Fortunately it shouldn't be all at once so you can get a little rest. The other thing is, if you are going to do multiple laps you will have to come out of the water between laps and run back up to the TA and over the timing mat.

Not sure I can offer too many points on tactics as being a group of single sporters (for this race) you team strategy will be a little different than ours as we will all be doing everything for the most part. I can tell you that is a great time so don't spend too much time worrying about slowing your team down or anything. Remember they might not even be competitive without you as there will be some great athletes out there.

I would suggest going out there with a "script" of sorts on who is going to do what leg and when (something like this S B R S S R R B B S S....you get the point). Then you will know how much rest you can get between legs. Tackling your swim in 0.5 mi increments may help as well.

Good luck and let me know if this helps or doesn't make sense or whatever (I'm still on my first cup of coffee).

Re: Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon [Inspiredbutired] [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the input, it is greatly appreciated, but I was also wondering about some nuts and bolts stuff...

How early do you planning on getting there? The transition area opens at 5:30, but the body marking doesn't start till 7.

How much of your swims do you "bank" before dark, since there is only like 90 minutes of swimming available in the morning? 80%? all?

Do you find it easier to do multiple laps at a time? Your suggestion was like S,B,R,SS,BB,RR, but is two easier than three. In the middle of the night, is it easier to do more than two in order to give the other teeam members more rest. Would it make sense to do S,B,R,SS,BB,SS,RR in order to "bank" more swims?

Thanks

Re: Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon [Inspiredbutired] [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, we are a team of 4 (triahtletes not single sporters) so our strategy will be different. Our goal is something like 23 total tri's. We plan on banking about 19 swims in the first half of the day and then finishing them in the morning. Everything of course hinges on predicted times until we get out there and see how we are doing. We probably won't have anyone doing back to back laps of anything because we always have someone ready to step up and do what's next. For example, at one point our script has us doing 8 swims in a row so it will look like this: S-athlete A S-Athlete B S-Athlete A S-Athlete B then repeat sequence with athletes c and d. I just think for you it will get progressively more difficult to do more than 2 swims in a row and I would certainly max out at 4 in a row. You will need time to rest. I think in the night doing 2 legs in a row would be ok but trust me, at 3 am even going out for a 5.2 miler (2 laps) will be tough. It's just hard to know how you guys will feel because it is not a natural thing to be running or biking at that time. We did not sleep either. We tried to arrange a couple hours off for everyone in the middle of the night but nobody could sleep because even though we were weary our minds were on the race. I hung out in the TA watching movies on the big screen and talking to people. Also keep in mind that you in the night even if you don't double up events you will have about 30-40 minutes to rest (assuming R R) or longer if it's B B before the next person has to go. Doubling up will of course extend this interval. That's what makes this race fun...logistics. You always have to be thinking.

Last year one of our guys pulled a hammy and couldn't run but was ok to bike so we had to swap some things up in the middle of the night

We will most likely be there at 6am getting our site set-up. Make sure you have a headlamp for the run and front and rear lights on the bikes as they are mandatory items. You are also allowed to use an Ipod on the run once it gets dark.

After rereading your post I think the idea of SBR SS BB SS RR type of plan looks like it would work well for you guys. Do the math with predicted times and see if it gets you to where you want to be by the swim close. I think the hardest part is arranging everything so that it comes out even in the end. Let me know if this helps or if I can answer anything else or if I missed anything.

Re: Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon [NoleRx] [In reply to] Can't Post

Race day today and quite excited to be competing in this unique event again. Em and I did the first 24 HOT race in '06 but RD Ian Adamson has continued to step up the event moving it from the Boulder Res - where the bike segment included a mixture of washboarded dirt roads and pavement - to it's current location at Denver's Cherry Creek State Park.

A few notables racing on teams tomorrow include Chuckie V, Tim Luchinske and Amanda Stevens. Like NoleRx said, team strategy is paramount, so it will be quite interesting to see how the race shakes out. Last year, Ian even used his deep connections for a 30 minute feature on NBC's Jeep World (see You Tube for these clips).

To all other racers tomorrow -- good luck and keep your eyes open!!

I raced the 8 hour with my wife. Was an excellent event and was very well run. The best value for money race anywhere. $80 entry fee which included a pair of Newtons and free beer and movie on a big screen after :) The organizers and sponsors were super friendly.

Chris Leigh was also there as part of a team in the 8 hours.

Did the 8 hour version solo yesterday. It was a hard day for me, and even though the swim was half as long I had same # tris plus extra leg last year. Seems like that was the general run of results this year looking at the 8 hour solos. In fact I think the best overall was a women who did 8 full tris
I really respect the 24 hour solos. I have been thinking about them this AM. Whew!

A team sounds like fun.

Some posts wondered about the swim at 1/4 and the times being slow. There is a run approx 1/4 mile RT down to water and back to transition that is included in swim times as you are timed at the transition exit and entrances.

It was a great race. Ian and team did a fantastic job.

Re: Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon [Roadndirt] [In reply to] Can't Post

Phew -- I'm so tired I can't even close my eyes and sleep! This after a monster breakfast and a much needed shower. My teammates were kind enough to let me sleep for two hours between 2am - 4am but the coolest part in my opinion was time trialing through the enclosed Cherry Creek State Park during the night time hours. My team pushed hard and managed to win the 3-person team with a total of 365-miles of swimming, biking and running. Our runner, a 22 year-old budding marathoner, ran 59.6 miles!!

Great job to RD, Ian Adamson, for hitting a home run with such a classy race and the first in tri unique racing format. Now in three years his race went from less than 30 racers to a sold out field of over 200 - where yes, the first 200 racers were issued a free pair of Newtons. It would be cool if he could one day expand this 24 hour series outside of Colorado to other US metro cities.

good to see you finally got the truck all packed up!

i'm interested to see how much time Amanda put on us on each of those swim laps. even with us wearing full wetsuits and her wearing an aquaman speedsuit, i'm guessing she was putting around one minute per swim on us.

Congrats on your win Lars! I was on an 8-person team last year and met up with Steven like 100 times in transition. He has a wicked sense of humor, and sometime in the middle of the night told me he thought our pretty bikes should mate with each other :)

luckily there were no cameras rolling this year...i'll always remember Tim Sheeper's reaction when i saw him Sunday morning around 6:45am after a full night of racing. he looked like he was doing his best bataan death march impersonation and rattled off a "hooyah" in the direction he thought the voice was coming from. i happened to be standing right next to him in the transition area, but his mind had wandered far away by that point in the race.

A guy I know from the area was team RACC (Racers Against Childhood Cancer). Seems they did pretty well. Sounds like a great race. It would be nice to see that venue open in other locations.
