New wheel concept
Can't Post
I have developed a new wheel design which uses four spokes and eight cables. I beleive it is very aero especially in dealing with side winds. My question to anybody is who, or which wind tunnel would be the best to test a wheel design at different yaw angles.

if this wheel is truly aero and you wanted to save some money in the initial testing, you could probably do some very good testing with a known closed course, a consistent rider, an accurate powermeter, and some good data analysis.

Aero or not, you should patent the design first before you disclose any more information on it. Once it becomes public domain here, you lose all rights to it (except bragging rights that is).

Why do you use spokes? Why not 12 cables?

That's not true, but mr. lubanski would still be well served to contact some reputable patent counsel.

I would contact Kirk or Kraig Willett over at Biketechreview.com for info on tunnel testing. They run a reputable shop and have tested with some of the world's best cyclists. There are other tunnels across the US (in North Carolina? and Denver? and Texas) that do the same kind of work.

The four spokes and are tubular carbon and radiate from the ctr of the hub. The eight cables do tension, and keep the wheel straight. To my knowledge, which is limited, this is a first for a wheel. Two types of structures in perfect harmony. Just like a suspension bridge.

In my head, it doesn't sound very aero at all.

Usually all 'spokes' in a wheel provide tension. Are your tubular carbon 'spokes' under compression?

If this is real, go show John Cobb. You can contact him by calling Blackwell Research.

Have you mounted this wheel on a bike and ridden it yet, and/or are you sure it won't simply fold up when you load it? I'm trying to visualize how those cables provide tension in the correct plane...

Isn't a thin round object like a cable less aero than a foiled shape?

With a total of 12 members between the hub and rim it is very very aero.

My four tubular carbon spokes radiate from the CENTER of the hub out in a cross pattern. From a frontal veiw they hid behind the rim all the way from hub to rim. The only spokes getting air are the eight, four on each side. What makes this wheel truly unique is even with heavy crosswinds. the front wheel is very very stable.

No disrespect to Mr. Cobb, but what I usually find with people who have their own concepts and ideas, is the attitude of Not of this house.

One must try to think out of the box. Wheel technology has been stuck using one type of spoke or cable or blade for the whole wheel. What I have done is mixed to completly different materials to obtain optimum results. Again just like a suspension bridge, compression and tension in harmony.

It may be less aero if all you do is think of straight ahead. One of my main concerns was to develop a wheel that could be ridden in heavy crosswinds. on aero bars, with full confidence.

Just got done riding 30k on it. For the last eight years I have been using preproduction four spoke Stella Azurre wheels. Some of the fastest wheels out there, but very scary in side winds. Ended up using one gear higher than normal on a ride that I have done several hundred times. But then again I do not know if Mr. Placebo got invited.

Steve, aerodynamic or not, unless you use an absolutely massive rim, i think you'll have one big problem with this type of wheel design: this wheel will not stay round as the miles and potholes pile up. sure, the forces may be in 'perfect balance', but that will necessarily mean that the rim will to be not be perfectly round. and maybe this drawing of steve's wheel will show up:
"Half of what we taught you is wrong. Unfortunately, we do not know which half."

I am not saying it is a training wheel. Take any full carbon rim, hit a nice pothole, and then tell me how it held up. By the way, this first edition weighs in at 620 grams.
