New Scott TT Rig Can't Post

I'm not normally a Scott fan, but this looks fairly interesting.

according to Scott, those stays create "0 drag"

looks like the whole bike is 'lower'. I wonder what the BB drop is. Cool looking though.

I still want that front wheel.

Re: New Scott TT Rig [jaylew] [In reply to] Can't Post

the BB shell looks pretty cool. but unfortunately all the "lines of intersection" between the shell and the extended downtube create substantial drag, compared to a "blended" design.

and we know where a bunch of these new scott carbon bikes will fail: right where the chainstay does its hard upward bend.

oh well ...

Pretty cool how the chainstays 'flare out' ....and how about the cable routing on the drive side chaistay!

That front wheel has "zero" brake surface. Its a track wheel. Now, if you never use your front brake, then the wheel is very fast. They are also very thin and fragile. They probably wouldn't last long on the road.

actually i believe that this is a new version that was seen in limited numbers last year. it has a brake surface and no 'bulges' arond the blades like the track version. mavic used to have it on their web site, but i'm not sure it is there anymore.

And, according to the cyclingnews story it is 20% more aero than their previous frame...made me laugh out loud in my office and caused my colleagues to ask what was so funny...not a great moment for me......

Well...if "more aero" is defined as lower drag at zero yaw and the 20% reduction is true, according to the "Brain bike" list that would actually put the Plasma2 at ~50 grams under a P3C. Of course, the REAL question is how does it do with off-axis winds where the P3C drag actually drops and the old Plasma rises?

Right now, I think it's "interesting". It might have some "sharp edges", but at least they're aligned somewhat parallel to the prevailing wind flow.

To me, like the Transition, despite it looking promising, I'll withhold final judgment until some actual drag numbers are released/leaked....

BTW, that extension below the BB (i.e. "Speed Skeg") reminds me of the old original P2 :-)

I don't like the kink in the rear stay although, if it's stiff enough...............

It's an interesting evolution and good looking enough to keep the consumers happy from an aesthetical point of view, but the bottom line is....... is it as fast as anything else ????

The thing that caught my eye (besides the front wheel "cutout"...which others have claimed is a tough one to make "work") is the junction of the seatstays to the seat tube. Why would they have the seatstays form a ledge perpendicular to the airflow like that? Granted, the air there is going to be a bit dirty, but still...

We can speculate all we want, but the proof will be in the numbers.

Oh yeah, of course it can be as fast as anything else! Don't you know that none of this silly stuff matters and as soon as you take a stretch or a drink from your bottle any measly gains are all out the window anyway??

(Damn...I forgot the pink font again... ;-)

Glad you brought this up. In all seriousness, how much of this frame drag directly translates to a 'significant' savings with a rider onboard on the road? It's nice to see the numbers comparing the different frames but was that done with the exact same aero bars at same height with same etc, etc etc? And what about the interaction of said parts & frames with a rider as opposed to just the frames in a wind tunnel? Is it that dramatic or do the numbers change quite a bit?

Depends how you define "dramatic", but for me numbers upwards of .5s/km are substantial.

Re: New Scott TT Rig [Tom A.] [In reply to] Can't Post

i think most interesting and promising thing on this frame is how well the fork and fork crown integrate into the frame shape. i think we might be seeing a lot more of that, maybe even from the big C.

that said, looking at the big number of quite sharp edges all over this scott frame, i'll bet you a lot of beers that in an unbiased test done at nearly any yaw angle past zero, the p3 (and i bet the p2) will kick the scott's ass. you gotta wonder what these designers are thinkin ' ...

The bike looks even better in person. I was lucky enough to be with the Scott team when they took that bike into the wind tunnel to compare it many of the other major brands. They were very thorough and fair when comparing all of the bikes including their own.

And??????

C'mon...you can't throw that out there without saying how it did relative to the others ;-)

Of course, the key question is if this wind tunnel visit occurred while the bike was being designed, or after? I think the answer to that question says a lot.
