NY Times: Running Styles Can't Post

There Are No Points for Style in the Marathon
http://www.nytimes.com/...PeovEyLMlRWwRQyuWdPg

I searched and did not notice this posted.

As a low cadence biker I like this quote:
"Even being economical — using the least energy at a given speed — is not necessarily the determining factor in winning a race. In fact, in cycling, athletes actually seem to spurn the most economical way to ride.
The most economical pedaling cadence, says Philip Martin, chairman of the department of kinesiology at Iowa State University, is 50 to 60 revolutions per minute. But elite cyclists ride at 90 to 95 revolutions per minute."
although 90% of the article involves running.

"Great swimmers must have great genetic gifts and also a great technique..."
I thought that looking at underwater videos it is apparent to swimming coaches that even Phelps has visible technique flaws.

I disagreed with that article. I think you can improve running speed and injury resistance by improving your form. The few exceptions amongst elite athletes does not mean everyone should just run how they naturally do, which is what the article seemed to suggest.

I noticed one interesting thing during both the men's and women's marathons. I was counting foot strikes and they were all running at a cadence of 200 footstrikes per minute. I watched a Joe Friel running technique video and he said that some people's running form may naturally correct itself by simply running at a faster cadence.
